Sebelius admits errors, pays $7,000 in back taxes

WASHINGTON – Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius recently corrected three years of tax returns and paid more than $7,000 in back taxes after finding "unintentional errors" — the latest tax troubles for an Obama administration nominee. The Kansas governor explained the changes to senators in a letter dated Tuesday that the administration released. She said they involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home and business expenses.

Sebelius said she filed the amended returns as soon as the errors were discovered by an accountant she hired to scrub her taxes in preparation for her confirmation hearings. She and her husband, Gary, a federal magistrate judge in Kansas, paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest to amend returns from 2005-2007.

Why don't the Dems that have accountants do like Hannity.................he always says he tells his accountant to "PAY EXTRA JUST INCASE"

Let me get this straight. She only hired an accountant after she was nominated?  Was she doing her taxes herself before that?   I think it's time for the IRS to audit every politician.

The same thing happened with a home improvement loan. Sebelius said they "mistakenly believed" the payments were still deductible.

-Insufficient documentation was found for some business expense deductions.

These are some of the most common errors on individual tax returns.  A program such as TurboTax offers many reminders about these errors.  I would guess that Sebelius and her husband had an accountant do their taxes.  The accountant in question probably tried to get away with these rather minor items.  The amounts (approximately $7K over three years) wouldn't even likely trigger an IRS audit.

I've seen far more egregious attempts at evading taxes.  This is not even close.  I can't stand the woman's politics (from what little I know), but this is nowhere in the class of what Daschle and others tried to do.

My only question regarding that is why would an accountant try or care?

I get what you are saying but there is a clear pattern still of folks that say one thing and then do the opposite.

If a conservative is held to a strict and rigorous standard because of "morality" issues that are associated with conservatives then those on the left who are well off and/or in power yet preach progressive taxation and class warfare should also be held to their own standards.

I'll concede the nature of the offenses are not as aggregious as the others that have paraded before us...but this has been a pretty long parade and we're damned sick of watching it especially when it has been put on by a bunch of money-grubbing moralists who tell us what shitbags we are for not throwing piles of money at their every absurd, obscene scheme.

I know you're well aware of this and are sympathetic; I'm just sayin'.

Yes, I completely understand what you and others have pointed out.  It does disgust me that seemingly every minor allegation about a Republican seems to paraded as an impeachable offense or such.

I'm speaking from an accountant's point of view.  I just thought there were a few things that should be explained from that perspective. :cheersmate:

But as I understood this, two of the black marks (are we still allowed to say that?) against Sebilius were two donations she made to charities. From what I gleaned, she said they didn't get a letter to turn over to the tax preparer in order to count those donations. I gave to 11 different charities last year, and when you don't get a letter from them, you can call and they will send another. I suppose she could have innocently forgot, but considering her position, she should have plenty of peons to take care of minutiae for her. I gave everything from our 3 businesses, and we have tons of deductions, and it is not like the Sebiliuses, who both have only one job, from which they get a statement, I'm sure. In any event, I don't want to cut her any slack, due to the fact she is an evil b!tc#. From her desire to remake our healthcare into Switzercare, to her close ties, and propping up of Tiller the baby killer. She will be confirmed, I supposed, my desire would be to see the Gov. and Tiller in the pen.

I agree. They had things double checked, errors were found and they wrote the check to clear it up. Other politicians simply did not pay for years and years.
