Poll question: Would you prefer capitalism or socialism?

For the purposes of this poll, you have to pick one or the other. If you can't or won't do so, please do not vote.

You need not fully support either capitalism or socialism. Simply choose which you would PREFER, if they were the only two options.

The "capitalism" meant here is current US corporate capitalism, just as it exists in this nation today.

The "socialism" meant here is any variety of modern democratic socialism. If you need details, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_socialism

Poll result (186 votes)
Capitalism   (47 votes, 25%)
Socialism   (139 votes, 75%)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5306863

Surprising number in favor of capitalism.

16. "Socialism" is NOT "collective ownership" of enterprises - that's COMMUNISM!!!

You don't know what you're talking about.

Socialism is about socializing the BASIC LIFE SUPPORTING elements of society - like making sure people have BASIC NEEDS taken care of by the government - or at least not to have to worry about them - like food, housing, education, and HEALTHCARE.

Same as the "socialism" of the roads, trash, water, sewers, police, etc...

Basic needs , like Free Pony's.

23. Wrong. True socialism involves the state owning the means of production.

That's why the right-wingers sound like morons when they call welfare "socialism." They're too stupid to study the definition of the word.

Welfare is a symptom of socialist programs.

2. Socialism is seen as evil by some.

Capitalism is seen as evil by some including me.

I have lived in a capitalism society for all of my life. I would like to try a society based on true socialism and see what it would be like. I don't think any of the countries that call themselves socialist states are truly that. The Scandinavian countries look pretty good to me, but since I have never been there I cannot say anything for sure.

Careful that door doesn't hit you on the ass on your way out.

6. "Corporate capitalism?" Cut the softeners, it's just capitalism

We need to stop prefacing this crap. The shit with AIG? The debacle in Iraq and Russia and Chile? The gutting of Thailand and Mexico? That is how capitalism is supposed to work. This is its function. There is no difference between "corporate" capitalism, "crony" capitalism, "free market" capitalism, or any of the other stuff - it's just capitalism. There is no other kind. The entire point is to enrich the rich and impoverish the poor.

You'll notice that every nation, every state, every municipality where "freer" capitalism has been embraced sees a plunge in its health - economic, political, social, and human, whatever your metric, the bar plummets. This is no coincidence. It's simply because that's what capitalism does. The only cure is to "socialize" - price caps, public ownership of utilities and health services, and the like. It's clearly demonstrable that the more "socialist" a nation is, the better its standard of living is, while the more "Capitalist" it is, the lower that standard of living is.

For those who are about to come in and post some drivel about the Soviet union... Communism is a form of capitalism. "We all own it, but I'm in charge" - It is perhaps the pinnacle of capitalism. If you take the wet dreams of the Heritage Foundation and the Friedmaniacs and crazy batshit libertarians, you'll find that even though these groups use Stalin's name as an insult, they all share Stalin's economic policies, support Stalin-style governance, and a Stalin-style military sector. In fact their biggest part with Stalin is that the dude at least offered housing for the poor and work for the unemployed.

Communism is a form of capitalism ... that's a new one on me.

21. By Far Capitalism. Socialism In Entirety Is Dumb.

I'm constantly surprised that OMC doesn't get banned.

Please show me this.....I am waiting.

Turn off the one of several TVs you probably have and get rid of the cable that provides you with picture and Internet you spew this crap on.
Get rid of all your cars and only go where public transportation will allow.
Maybe you can keep one but you should start paying at least 5.00/gallon to drive it.

Tell me again how bad the standard of living is here in the USA.
Freakin dumbass.

Go ahead and demonstrate.  Here's another example of them being impressed at themselves for sounding pretentious.  "clearly demonstrable."

It's clearly demonstrable that...

The fact of the matter is...

As everyone knows....

I have always said that...

There is a consensus concerning...

If you any hear those phrases get ready for a really big whopper of a lie as the speaker has just told you that there will be no proof to what they are about to say.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I'll claim one exception to your generality, sir.

I tend to use those phrases with some degree of frequency in my work.  However, it's usually AFTER I've spent at least the last 1/2 hour - more often as much as 2-3 hours - establishing the supporting evidence for the assertion following that phrase.

If they really got what they think they want they'd be in for a rude awakening. None of the elites of their party, Soros, Lewis, Buffet, Hollywood elite, rich congresspeople, the president and his WH denizens would ever give up their money or future money to fill the coffers of the national kitty. The very rich will remain rich, they would still live in gated communities...it will instead be the average working person who will fund everything. The very rich won't ever be required to pitch in their share because they'll be the ones making all the rules.
