Matthew Rothschild: The Pope’s Immoral Message on AIDS in Africa   Updated at 10:48 PM

from The Progressive:

The Pope’s Immoral Message on AIDS in Africa
By Matthew Rothschild, March 17, 2009

The Pope is in Africa, and in his infinite wisdom, he showed the utmost ignorance on the urgent subject of the AIDS epidemic.

On the plane ride over, the Pontiff declared that “you can’t resolve it with the distribution of condoms.” He added, appallingly, “On the contrary, it increases the problem.”

Anyone who’s been dealing with the AIDS crisis in Africa understands that the mass distribution of condoms is one of the only effective ways of stemming the spread of this hideous plague.

Sub-Saharan Africa is the epicenter of the plague. 22 million people there are infected with HIV, and three out of every four AIDS deaths in the world occur there.

And that’s where the Pontiff is headed, delivering a message of denial and a bouquet of poison flowers to the people who are suffering needlessly from this catastrophic disease.

The Pope can prattle on all he wants about the wonders of abstinence, but it’s a fact that people are going to have sex. ..........(more)

The complete piece is at: http://www.progressive.org/pope.html

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x5277379

Condoms ?

They think condoms will stop aids in Africa.

It would be hysterically funny if they weren't serious.

Who is the Pope to tell people not to screw around.  :mental:

2. Imposing western "values" on foreign countries never work out well

India. Iran. Vietnam. South Africa. China. Palestine.

All victims of white men making "decisions" "for their own good".

I hope the Africans protest his presence vigorously.

Since when has there ever been a country called "palestine".

But in a way they're correct. The hated white devils should withdraw completely from Africa.

6. The hierarchy is still stuck firmly in the middle ages

no matter if the Pope wears red shoes. He is a man of the Twelfth Century, not the twenty first.

Core dogma says that men produce seeds and women are the flowerpots into which they plant them and anything that disrupts the process causes the tiny, perfect human beings in those seeds to die, and that is murder. It was a belief common in the ancient world and adopted whole from the writings of Aristotle.

Henry VIII had the right idea when he divorced the English church from Rome and the corrupt hierarchy of his day. It's only a pity that the geopolitics of the day prevented other European countries from doing the same.

It's the hierarchy which has rendered itself obsolete by its ignorance and refusal to move into the present. The best thing the church as a whole can do is divorce themselves from Rome and from Mediaeval ignorance all at once.

Speaking of cultures and people stuck in a prior time..

What group of people is it that don't want to force the African culture - which is in large part behind the easy spread of aids there - to change and catch up with the rest of the world.

What we have here is . . . evil (DU) calling good (the Pope) evil, and the evil done as good (carefree sex).  The Bible has several references to evil men calling evil good . . .
"Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of Liberty." - Thomas Jefferson

"All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don't sit looking at it - walk!" -Ayn Rand

Why try to educate people who think raping babies will cure their AIDS and raping women will ensure they don't become lesbians?

Hey DUmmies!  You don't want to discuss Africa's cultural deficiencies, fine.  You want to claim science, equally fine.

#1 Latex condoms are known to break, especially considering that in Sub-saharan Africa, the men are known to prefer "dry sex" where the woman's vaginal secretions are removed through some method.

#2 Latex condoms right out of the wrapper, and in good condition have holes in them 5 microns in size.  The AIDS virus is .5 microns in size.  Think one might slip through?

#3 AIDS tend to affect those with compromised immune systems more than those who had healthy immune systems prior to becoming affected.  Sub-saharan Africa is a hotbed of drug abuse, poverty, malnutrition, warfare, thuggery, and disease even without the AIDS virus present.  At least if people restrained their actions the disease couldn't spread as fast.  That might also force it to mutate into a less than lethal strain.

But what is trying to save lives compared to rutting with everything you can, eh DUmmies?

In most cases of rape, it is usually dry sex.

In most cases of rape, it is usually dry sex.

In the case of rape, that is given.  I was not referring to instances of rape.  It is common in Africa for men to prefer that the woman not be wet when engaging in sex, and women using some type of herbs and spices will keep themselves dry.  Of course they haven't invented the type of steel-belted radial condom that can actually withstand that yet.  Hell, I don't know how the women stand it, this makes it rougher on them.

Also, men will have "city wives" when they work in the city and away from their usual family.  It is not uncommon for a city wife to have three or four different "husbands" and of course the husbands move on perhaps to a new city wife from time to time.  I guess there is some difference between that and outright prostitution, but I confess that I am not sure what the difference is.

Combine those two practices by themselves, and you get a situation where STDs of all sorts are going to spread far and fast.  Make them just a couple among a variety of factors and HIV has a place where it can easily spread from victim to victim.

The Pope could frame his entire argument in purely scientific terms as to why his statement is both scientifically and morally correct.  The DUmmies would object because the pope said it.

Uh. Since the only 100% sure way not to catch a STD is NOT to engage in sex, and condoms are NOT 100% effective, NOR used 100% of the time, pushing condoms is clearly not helping.

What struck me about the warped primitive's comments is that she appears to know nothing about medievalism or the Middle Ages, and even less about how the Roman Catholic church was affected by, and influenced, the Middle Ages.

The warped primitive apparently decades ago decided to Hate religion, and looking around for grounds on which to justify her Hate, picked up all those worn tired canards and stereotypes and cliches about the Middle Ages.

But then and again, I guess no one has ever accused the primitives of knowing anything about, and understanding, history.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Yeah, here's the formula, but you and I already know the formula anyway:

Things that are good and decent in people and life = the primitives Hate.

Things that are loathesome, and with very good reason, to decent and civilized people = the primitives love.

So, then, the opposite of everything is what the primitives want is Good.  (I know this already, but I want to state this in the forum.)
