Maybe This is Why the AIG Bonuses were Left Intact
« on: March 18, 2009, 12:09:19 AM »

Senator Barack Obama received a $101,332 bonus from American International Group in the form of political contributions according to Opensecrets.org. The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are - Senators Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama.

The A.I.G. Financial Products affiliate of A.I.G. gave out $136,928, the most of any AIG affiliate, in the 2008 cycle.  I would note that A.I.G.’s financial products division is the unit that wrote trillions of dollars’ worth of credit-default swaps and "misjudged" the risk.

The Washington Post reports a "mob effect" at A.I.G financial products division:

Quote
A tidal wave of public outrage over bonus payments swamped American International Group yesterday. Hired guards stood watch outside the suburban Connecticut offices of AIG Financial Products, the division whose exotic derivatives brought the insurance giant to the brink of collapse last year. Inside, death threats and angry letters flooded e-mail inboxes. Irate callers lit up the phone lines. Senior managers submitted their resignations. Some employees didn't show up at all.
With the anger and rage that is being exhibited against A.I.G., perhaps the bonuses Obama received from A.I.G. explain Obama's A.I.G crocodile tears.

Now that the Wall street Journal has revealed that A.I.G. paid bonuses of $1 million or more to 73 employees, it's time to ask if recipients of A.I.G. "bonuses," including President Obama, will give what now ought to be taxpayer money back?

Hm-m-m-m...

Dodd is taking a lot of heat from the press for the provision in the baiout bill that left bonuses intact but according to salon.com:

Quote
It was Dodd who did everything possible -- including writing and advocating for an amendment -- which would have applied the limitations on executive compensation to all bailout-receiving firms, including AIG, and applied it to all future bonus payments without regard to when those payments were promised. But it was Tim Geithner and Larry Summers who openly criticized Dodd's proposal at the time and insisted that those limitations should apply only to future compensation contracts, not ones that already existed. The exemption for already existing compensation agreements -- the exact provision that is now protecting the AIG bonus payments -- was inserted at the White House's insistence and over Dodd's objections. But now that a political scandal has erupted over these payments, the White House is trying to deflect blame from itself and heap it all on Chris Dodd by claiming that it was Dodd who was responsible for that exemption.

HA!  You found an article on what I was saying yesterday in another thread.  Funny!  Sad....but funny!

Of course I don't think this grilling of the AIG CEO is going to mention any of this.

Amazing...the stench is getting stronger and stronger.

Saw Chris Dodd on tv bloviating about how he had no clue that the date for bonuses got into HIS amendment.   :whatever:  Like he is fooling anyone.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I've been on the phone most of the last 45 minutes....but I was watching Shep Smith at 3 and he was all over this "measure" that was left in the stimulus bill....

Woe to Congress for not reading before passing......it's coming back to bite them in their collective asses.

And Obama signed it....

Rep. Connie Mack of Fl, is on Neil Cavuto, and is asking for Geithner's resignation. or that he be fired. Apparently he knew about the bonuses.

This pretty much says it all  Dodd wrote it and then complained about it.

Well, there's one feather for Obama's cap!

He can claim to be the President with a government scandal within the fist 100 days of his presidency.  His legacy must be proud.

Actually, I got the link for the salon.com article from DU...

The Obama Admin. and the Democ. in DC are providing us with a real live soap opera on a daily basis. To listen to these liberal idiots, none of them are the blame for these foul-ups. SNL should use some of this material on their programs. Heck, they have enough material since the inauguration to last them thru 2012.

Update

first he denies it, then he fesses up AND throws the 0 under the bus BEFORE the 0 can do the same !

a little Capital Hill hardball for the 0 to chew on !

Quote
Dodd acknowledged his role in the change after a Treasury Department official told CNN the administration pushed for the language.

Both Dodd and the official, who asked not to be named, said it was because administration officials were afraid the government would face numerous lawsuits without the new language.

Dodd, a Democrat, told CNN's Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer that Obama administration officials pushed for the language to an amendment designed to limit bonuses and "golden parachutes" at those companies.

"The administration had expressed reservations," Dodd said. "They asked for modifications. The alternative was losing the amendment entirely."

On Tuesday, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with adding the language, which has been used by officials at bailed-out insurance giant AIG to justify paying millions of dollars in bonuses to executives after receiving federal money.

My fellow Americans, there is nothing audacious about hope. Hope is what makes people buy lottery tickets instead of paying the bills. Hope is for the old gals feeding the slots in Atlantic City. It destroys the inner-city kid who quits school because he hopes he'll be a world-famous recording artist.

What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama?

One is a well turned-out, good-looking, and let's be honest, pretty sexy piece of eye-candy.

The other kills her own food.

Oh this just gets better and better.  Fox is saying he said the Treasury Office told him to do it.  So maybe Geithner will get that pink slip that Obama said he was safe from yesterday.
