U.S. President Barack Obama helped mark St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday by nominating Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney for the ambassadorship to Ireland.

Rooney, 76, is a lifelong Republican who endorsed Obama during Pennsylvania's contentious Democratic primary. He later campaigned for him in Steelers country in western Pennsylvania.
