Unfortunately, however, the mood of the country mirrors that sentiment exactly, with certain notable exceptions. That didn't happen overnight.

A lot of manipulation, swindling, and outright lying has convinced a disturbingly large percentage of the population that the government is here to help.

And they believe that drivel.
