After you die, have you pondered a green way to be returned to the earth?

Not the most happy of topics, but I'm assuming many DUers have pondered the most environmentally friendly to dispose of...you! I'd be really interested to hear what you've come up with! I hope to live to be 100, but having crossed the big 50, I at least am now forcing myself to have some plan in place so my kiddos don't have to guess which environmentally friendly way to dispose of their ol man. I know, planning this stuff is actually the most caring thing to do for the ones that love us.

Ummmmm, but what to do????

I'm still debating whether I prefer being buried in a totally bio friendly container (with no yukky chemical preservatives) and being planted in the earth to nourish to plants vs cremation. I've heard if you get burned in a modern facility (that burns hot and efficiently) and have your mercury fillings pulled ahead of time --- there is minimal pollution and of course, more earth not being taken up by a burial.

more here

I've always thought the Sky Burial was a cool idea and it has been practiced in Tibet (and other cultures) for a long time. Sky Burial
-I love the mountains and this has to be the most environmentally friendly method of all, but obviously not practical in the burbs USA.

Or do what Edward Abby did - find a beautiful wilderness spot away from it all and just have friends do the deed, **** the legalities. I believe he was buried in an ol sleeping bag somewhere in the Cabeza Prieta desert in southern Arizona (but the spot will forever remain secret.) Of course, not all of us have a good lead on a hidden spot in the woods or out in the desert. I do actually, but would I want to ask anybody I love to haul me there --- thinking...

Abbey did say this regarding his death:

"If my decomposing carcass helps nourish the roots of a juniper tree or the wings of a vulture - that is immortality enough for me. And as much as anyone deserves."

I could live (or die) with that. What about you?

Has environmentalism reached a new summit of silliness ?

Unfortunately the soylent-coal power plant is unable to run on tree huggers due to DEA regulations on emissions.

7. Actually, I've though of that as well

But unless we give our property to an organization like the Nature Conservancy (to forever remain in it's natural state), someday our kids/friends/heirs or their kids will leave it and eventually there would be this piece of property with a body buried in it.

Not sure on the legalities there?

Tho I like the idea too :)

News flash genius : Your property is a long way from being in it's natural state.

Good luck with that.

8. Being dumped out in the boondocks would suit me fine. Buzzards gotta eat too.

:D

But that isn't very practical (meaning convenient) so I've arranged for cremation. It doesn't use much more energy than grilling hamburgers for a small tailgate event :D

That won't be very good for the poor fish, and PETA would probably have a picket line at the event.

I've already revealed to my family what to do.  After I die, go to the funeral home and find the largest, lavishly ornate, most expensive casket they have.  Now, get the cardboard box that it came in, put me in it, drop me in the ground, and cover me with dirt.

I'm gonna be as green as can be.  Told my wife to have them cut everything in side of me out, and them dump me into the forest somewhere.  Let nature handle me however she will.

Polar bear
Great white shark
African lion

And be eaten by one.  I understand that this will have some toxic effects on the carnivore, but God will balance it out.

I don't plan to leave enough parts unscathed that anybody would want them.  I've also told my wife to just plant me in a pine box out under a shade tree somewhere.  I've got no real reason to leave a mummy behind.

My Mom did that, made arrangements with the Med School in town in advance.  It does work a bit better if you're older and settled in one place more so than if you're young and still roving the world.

In my case, I really don't care what happens but I figure the family will figure it out.  My wife is constitutionally incapable of doing anything that is questionably legal (like dumping my body in a hole on the back forty) so I expect my remains will end up in a local veterans' cemetery, which is fine with me.

I guess the DUmmies have never heard of green cemeteries.  They have been around for awhile.  Here is a vid of our local whack job  enviromentalist describing his green cemetery.  This place is right behind my office.  It is actually a good idea but this dude is a total freak.  He and I have had 'words' lately because he tries to hold our community hostage.

He thinks our coop power company is out to get him because he put this cemetery in the way of a new power line that is supposed to go in.  He put this in AFTER the power company made their proposal and now claims they are simply wanting to desecrate the cemetery.  He is an idiot.

My husband wants one of those King Arthur things. He wants to be put in his drift boat in our pond (it's a pretty huge pond that covers about an acre and a half) and have his sons shoot flaming arrows at the boat. Men really are a different species.

What happens after I die, is all up to whoever loves me when I die.  They are the ones that matter.   It doesn't matter at all to me.  I want them to do whatever helps them get through it as best they can.  Grief totally sucks and I don't want to cause any more than absolutely necessary.

I agree with terry, I leave that up to my loved ones.  They are the ones that will have to live with decisions they make about it.

Yeah, that dude from Texacon's neighborhood is a classic moonbat, except he's missing those ugly glasses they all wear.  Why do old guys wear ponytails?  They're not in style anymore even for young guys.  The worst is when the old guy is bald.

I agree with Terry.  I was planning on being cremated, but the idea so upset my husband that I can't do that anymore.  We do both agree that anything that can be used by anyone else should by all means be taken.
