Will Florida votes count at the convention?

TAMPA - Florida Democratic votes may count after all.

Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama split the Super Tuesday delegates -- Clinton holds a slight lead.

There is a growing possibility of a floor fight at the convention, and party leaders now say Florida could participate.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean hinted Florida's punishment could be lifted if state Democrats file one last appeal.

That could help Hillary Clinton, who won Florida's Primary on January 29th. She personally loaned $5 million to her own campaign to keep going.

"I loaned it because I believe very strongly in this campaign.  We had a great month fundraising in January, broke all records.  But my opponent was able to raise more money," said Clinton.

Obama supporters say the results of the Florida Primary were invalid because of the boycott. Some party leaders want the state to hold a new Democratic caucus this spring. If the Florida ban is lifted, it's not clear which delegates would be seated.

I feel a little bit odd being so interested in the dem race, but if florida and michigan are counted, it's a huge deal for hillary.

Well, this could save her the embarassment of having to actually bribe/threaten the superdelegates to stab Obama in the back, but if they do this without holding new primaries, it will rip the Democrats into pieces, and rightly so.

the full court press on the SDs has already started in earnest.  I was just about to post a thread about that.

how do you hold "new" primaries?  they already had them.  the only question is whether to count them or not.  "punishing" FL and MI by "withholding" their delegates was just a staggeringly stupid move by Screamer Dean.

That's the problem.  But after the party leadership to say they WON'T count and then change the rules afterward to selectively benefit one candidate, how do you repair the appearance that the fix was in all along and this was the backstop plan for a Hillary win all along?

Fortunately it's not MY problem!

lauri and I have been watching this for weeks, waiting for it to blow up.  how do you disenfranchise the third most populated state in the country?  and for that mater, who are the parties (RNC included, now that I think about it) to tell a state when they are to have their primaries?

indeed - If FL and MI make a difference as to who the candidate is or isnt it will have MAJOR reprocussions within the Dem party

A ) if Hillary wins by using those delegates, then 'the fix' was in, she cheated, was selected, etc etc....

B ) if Obama wins without those delegates counted, then he is the candidate of voter disenfranchisement.

The other big problem with a Hillary win-by-decree is many blacks who have voted for the first time for Obama will feel disenfranchised themselves and most likely not vote in the general - more bad news for Dems.

And, its clear they have both burnt a lot of bridges so its almost impossible that they would put the loser in the VP spot.

With McCain, we may not win, but it may turn out that the Dems lose the race for us.
