How many DUers are old enough to have lived through historical events when it was breaking news?
Edited on Sun Mar-08-09 06:27 PM by Cleita
I am and I Iived through all of these events when they were breaking news.

World War II and the end of Hitler
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
"V"day
The end of the Great Depression
The beginning and end of the cold war with the Soviet Union
The middle class affluence of the late forties and fifties
The Korean War
The threat of nuclear war up until the dissolution of the Soviet Union
The assassination of President Kennedy, which was televised
Medicare for the elderly becoming law.
The Civil Rights movement
The counter-culture movement of the sixties.
The assassination of Robert Kennedy on live TV (local coverage).
The beginning and end of the Vietnam War which killed so many for no good reason that I can determine
The landing on the Moon. Big event and I don't know why I forgot it.
The resignation of Richard Nixon
The Iran hostage situation and how it brought down President Jimmy Carter
The assassination of Anwar Sadat, which I also witnessed on live TV
The beginning of the real technology age and how far we have gotten today into stuff that was only Sci-Fi when I was a kid
The awful Reagan/Bush years, twelve of them
The beginning of institutionalized homelessness in this country shortly after Reagan took office
The increase of women's rights and women breaking the glass ceiling and also entering politics
The fall of the Berlin Wall
The hunting of President Bill Clinton by the RWing neo-cons who infiltrated conservative politics and now own it.
The destruction of our Media and end of mainstream journalism.
The attack on labor by weaking the unions and changing the labor laws that protected workers
The shipping of our manufacturing base and jobs to other countries leaving Americans unemployed or forced to take menial jobs
The past eight years of fascism, dictatorship and bankruptcy brought to us by a President appointed by the Supreme Court
The election of our first African American President.

Hopefully, things will start to turn around now and I can die in peace as I can't afford to live anymore if my Social Security and Medicare are compromised. Wall Street got a good chunk of my savings and coming inflation will get the rest, so it's all I have. I have lived indeed in interesting time

Cleita must be pretty old.  I'll add some she did not mention

I can remember where I was and what I was doing when

LBJ's Funeral was on TV

The Watergate trials were going on

When Elvis died

When Reagan was shot

When Challenger exploded

and when a little girl was caught in a pipe in Midland, Texas

You can add your own memories.

I was one of a few kids pulled out of class to watch the Challenger launch. I remember them turning it off and sending us back to class. No grief counselors or anything. lol.

Many of her "remembrances" are laced with ideological non-sense.  Cleita's just a bitter person.  That she's older only means she has less time to complain.

I can remember my dad putting cardboard in his holy shoes due to rubber being rationed during World War 2 so that my brother and I could have shoes that fit us.

my daddy grew up and they did sharecropping and picked cotton and did a lot of weird things as well as walked 5 miles to school, against the wind, uphill both ways.

As a city kid, I never rode a school bus; walked less than a mile to school. Today, I would not let a kid walk a block with all the crazies out there. In the early 60's, a friend of mine and I would hitch hike 180 miles every weekend between home and college.

everytime I see elementary school kids walking home from school unattended, I cringe. even for the ones who live a block away

I was at work and they had a little tiny TV in the shipping office.  I was watching kind of half heartedly when the shuttle blew up and caught me out of left field.

About 2 minutes after it happened a friend of mine from the front office called back and told me NASA stood for Now Accepting Seven Applications. :whatever:

Yes, Docstew, I noticed that.
She also blamed homelessness on Reagan.  Isn't there a credible school of thought that blames much of the homelessness on the liberals wanting to "liberate" mentally ill people from the asylums?

Rather glaring omissions.

On the other hand...she also left out John Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald being shot.

Selective memory?

I will never, ever forget watching the second plane fly into the tower as it was happening.....I don't know how anyone could. I will always remember thinking that this just can't be real....and the undescribable feeling I had watching the first tower fall....knowing the second would too.

I call BullShirt! The asassination of JFK was NOT televised! If it was, why in the hell did they need the McGruder film, which was shot by a bystander? I was in 3rd grade at the time!

JFK was not shot while on TV.....Lee Harvey Oswald was. I was watching it when it happened. I was in 6th grade. I watched tv for days with my parents.....as we were sent home from school right after JFK was shot.

I do remember seeing the RFK shooting on TV, but I don't remember if he was shot in front of live TV cameras or if it was film. I just remember seeing the shooting on TV.

There was a TV camera in the kitchen recording his exit. They didn't actually catch the shooting on tape but the aftermath immediately afterwards.

Hell I remember where I was in Midland and what I was doing when they pulled Jessica McClure out of the well.

Abraham Zapruder caught the kill shot. But your right, that was not on TV till much later.

I remember where I was when I heard that the Challenger had exploded.  Same with the Berlin Wall.  Same with Reagan being shot (a cousin of my father's was on the Presidential escort detail that day, and my aunt and my mother had a discussion over what he was shouting at the time).  I remember watching the Apollo 12 landing, though I can't remember the Apollo 11 landing.  Must have been too young, even though the two were only five months apart, IIRC.

I wonder how many DUmb Asses would admit to having lived through the heady days of the first Fitzmas, their heart all a -flutter and their palms even sweatier than normal as those 48 business hours ticked down to zero, and Santa Fitz' passed by Skins Island without even slowing his sleigh to wave at the primitives around the bonfire below him.
