Officer crashes after reading laptop in cruiser

JACKSONVILLE — The Florida Highway Patrol says a Jacksonville police officer crashed into a stopped truck moments after reading her laptop in her cruiser.

A Highway Patrol spokesman said Officer Amanda Meyer struck the truck Monday morning that had stopped at a railroad crossing. The spokesman said Meyer briefly glanced at her mounted laptop before the accident.

Meyer suffered injuries to her left arm. She was taken to a hospital but was later released. The truck driver was not injured.

No charges have been filed.

A sheriff’s office official said there was no written policy regarding the use of laptops by officers in transit, although officers are told during training not to read or type on their laptops while driving.

It's pretty common actually. Prior to MDCs, dispatchers would give call details over the radio. Now, they just tell you where the call is and a brief general description of the call type, then let you read the rest off of the computer. Plus, at my agency, you're required to indicate when you're en route to a call and when you arrive by punching keys on the computer.
Never demand that which you are incapable of taking by force, DUmmie.

Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt.

I've had concerns of stuff like this happening ever since I first observed this method of communications in Minnesota. I didn't think it was safe then and I still don't. A civilian can't watch a movie while driving, there is legislation across the country to stop "texting while driving" and it's a KNOWN fact that a cellphone user is four times as likely to have a crash when they are using a cellphone  while driving. Police officers are no different that us mere "civilians".

Illinois no longer allows state troopers to use cell phones when driving unless they are using a hands free device. http://illinoishomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=51651
