NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock futures dropped Monday as financial giants like American International Group and HSBC Holdings moved to raise more capital and as Warren Buffett said the economy would be in "shambles" this year.
Futures remained under water but off earlier lows after the government reported incomes rose more than expected in January, while personal savings climbed to a 14-year high.
"The data are a welcome surprise for the beleaguered stock market," said analysts at Action Economics.
indicated a retreat below the 7,000 level, as the March contract dropped 102 points to 6,950. ...

Guessing a market bottom is usually a silly thing to do but other then a few daily blips I see this going to 5000 and lower by the start of summer.
Obamanomics still isn`t fully priced in yet.

I'd like to give the "Big Zero" a great big hug.....and while I had him in my arms ...jump off a tall building.

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

If Obama keeps listening to numb-nuts who were investment bankers at Goldman S. like Geithner/Paulsen and a senile old fart like Volker whose claim to fame was 18% interest rates under Carter, the Dow may crater further to the 4k level.

I freely admit that I don't know much about the stock market, but I know that higher is better.  I also know that if I am well known as having an impact on it, do something, and it craters, that it's time to stop that something (IOW, you can't get out of a hole by digging more and say that we're going to go into this hole deeper than anyone imagined)

Well, to sum it up, we started this bailout bullshit under Bush. It didn't work. It didn't work when Obama did it. It's not working now that he's doing it again. The bailouts DO NOT WORK. Capitalism can only work when you let capitalism work.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

Just saw Glen Beck on Fox saying he expects the bottom to be in the 3,000 to 5,000 range, and while he is a commentator rather than an economist, perhaps that gives him a certain freedom of action to speak what he's heard from real experts that members of that club might not have, since the Fuehrer's meda police might hang them from a lightpole for defeatist sentiments.  I have to agree with him...though I expect it in the higher end of that range.

I think he would have to take additional steps to make a bad situation worse for it to go that far.  Of course, based on his track record so far, that is not only possible but very likely.

When it hits 4K I'll start thinking about switching my retirement back over to the S&P index fund option from bonds.  Recovering from the trashcan in the 3-4K range back up to DJIA 7K level would more than restore the damage done between the election and the point I threw in the towel on optimism.

he isn't addressing the problem.  he is going on about the business of cramming the liberal agenda down the country's throat as though the whole "depression thingy" is all fixed, when in reality even his pelosi created nightmare of a "stimulus bill" did everything except address the actual problem.

the markets will continue to drop until he does something about the original problem.

watch for friday when the jobs report comes out.  if it is worse than expected, or even as bad as expected, the bottom will fall out again.
