Kay Warren: Following Christ means being ‘seriously disturbed’

WACO, Texas (ABP) -- Becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ means being willing to say “yes” unconditionally to God, knowing he likely will lead his followers into uncomfortable places, Kay Warren recently told a conference at Baylor University.

For Warren, it meant becoming a global advocate for people with HIV/AIDS, for orphans and for other marginalized and vulnerable groups.

Her husband, Rick, is pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., and author of The Purpose Driven Life.

Accepting Christ’s invitation to deny self, take up a cross and follow him means being “dangerously surrendered, seriously disturbed and gloriously ruined,” she told The Next Big Idea conference, an event sponsored by Baylor’s School of Social Work, Truett Theological Seminary and the Leadership Network.

Warren told participants both at a conference plenary session and workshop how she became “seriously disturbed” a few years ago by reading an article about AIDS in Africa.

“The article said there were 12 million children in Africa orphaned by AIDS. And I couldn’t name a single one of them. There were 33 million people with AIDS. And I couldn’t name a single person who was HIV-positive
,” she said.

....

“The pursuit of the American dream in and of itself will ruin you. Pursuit of health, wealth and happiness will ruin you. And so will following Christ. If you’re going to be ruined, why not be ruined for something that matters -- something that lasts?” she asked.

Being a disciple of Christ means doing what Jesus did -- “making the invisible God visible” and caring for “the least, the last and the lost,” Warren said.

Now, doesn't she sound like someone the DUmp could appreciate?

7. As someone who objects to Christianity in principle...
...I would like to put this "Exhibit A" sticker on Mrs. Warren and her theology of despair.

Nothing good comes from the denial of self and the doctrine of redemption by suffering
. And the pursuit of health, wealth and happiness are normal.

To paraphrase the DUmp..."We don't care how much good she does, she a FUNDIE!!!   :argh: :chairshot: :angryvillagers:

Apart from demanding the gov't confiscate other peoples' money where it is washed through a dozen bureacracies and 2 dozen special interest groups before sending it to Africa to be stolen by the corrupt local governments what have these $#!+bags done to alleviate the suffering caused by AIDS in Africa?

Since man dropped out of the trees, he has been spiritual! Even these idiots believe in 'healing white light"! How many posts have we seen where they hummmmm..... and meditate in order to "heal" their fellow turds?

WTF?!! Why is it okay to send "vibes' to ones partners in crime, yet it is blasphemy to believe in one's GOD?

What a bunch of bovine excrement these wasters of sun, wind, and mineral these pukes are!

(edited to add how much I appreciate the job our MODs do to keep this the best site on the net!)

Joe "I gave $300/year for ten years to charity" Biden might disagree with them.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Depends on where you place in your tax bracket.

If, for sake of argument, your salary places you $100 over the next lowest bracket that $300 donation will be deducted from your salary and thus qualify you for the lower rate.

I know the indivudual tax deduction for medical expenses is a minimum of 7.5% of your AGI.  I qualified for that back in 2003. :(

There's no minimum, and Biden isn't smart enough to play games with the tax brackets, even if that would work (because really it wouldn't for reasons too technical to be worth explaining).  He's just cheap.

I notice that not one of the self-righteous assbags has bothered to find out how much work/money/time has been spent. All they do is run around with their assumptions that she's a con artist. These people need their fantasies to sustain their hate.

It's also ironic that they grouse about the headline being indicative of Christian self-loathing yet they're a bunch of paralyzed hand-wringers on any given issue. "America is such an evil country...what's Obama gonna do-o-o-o-o!?!?"

He'd rather be "patriotic" and pay LOTS of taxes, right?
