Online relationship scams

I've been browsing the Yahoo Personals for the past couple of months, and I noticed something interesting. There are a bunch of ads from women who live in Montreal, and the ads all use the exact same first two paragraphs about how they are a devout Christian, and they bring this up up front because it is so important to them, yada yada. Then the last two paragraphs are different from ad to ad, and the pictures are always of very attractive women, not so hot to be unbelievable, but real looking. I also noticed that most of the legitimate ads from Montreal list the burough as the location, like Ville St-Laurent, or Verdun, rather than just Montreal. These Christian ads with the exact same opening paragraphs all just say Montreal. (It's a big island with 3 million people, so saying you are in Montreal is like saying you are in NY instead of Brooklyn, most Montreallers identify with their burough.)

Then I was talking to an online friend the other night, and he was telling me how his brother met this woman in a Christian chat room. He was raving about her for weeks, how beautiful she was, and so caring and nice, she even mailed him a care package full of dumb but cute stuff. She lived a couple of states away, and wanted him to come see her. So he arranged time off, and drove there to visit her. When he knocked on the door, some old man answered, and had never heard of the woman. So he drives all the way back home, and find's his apartment cleaned out.

He called the police, but they were not very hopeful that they could track down who it was. So that night he goes to bed, and he hears this beeping sound. He looks all over the house, and finally finds the source. There was a beeper laying on the floor in the bathroom between the toilet and the wall. Whoever had robbed him had used the can and dropped their beeper. So he takes this to the police, and they are able to source it back to the owner. Two girls got busted for the setup/scam/robbery, and they lived quite a bit closer to him than the place he had gone to meet the woman.

As someone said in another thread, God don't like it when you use his Son's name to steal from people.

The wife got on me for looking at the "personals" on craigslist. I told her that I was bored and looking for the scammers. Of course she didn't believe me so I had to show her a few. Find a suspicious looking sort of local ad (they just sortta stick out) and then hit Texas, California or someplace and ......presto exact same ad.....

Most of the sweet young things on craigslist are hookers, professionals....and the older ain't much better. There might be a few, very few, that are real but I wouldn't take the chance even if I was in the market for one.
