Why I Support the Stimulus

By Arlen Specter
Monday, February 9, 2009; Page A17

I am supporting the economic stimulus package for one simple reason: The country cannot afford not to take action.

The unemployment figures announced Friday, the latest earnings reports and the continuing crisis in banking make it clear that failure to act will leave the United States facing a far deeper crisis in three or six months. By then the cost of action will be much greater -- or it may be too late.

Wave after wave of bad economic news has created its own psychology of fear and lowered expectations. As in the old Movietone News, the eyes and ears of the world are upon the United States. Failure to act would be devastating not just for Wall Street and Main Street but for much of the rest of the world, which is looking to our country for leadership in this crisis.

The legislation known as the "moderates" bill, hammered out over two days by Sens. Susan Collins, Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman and myself, preserves the job-creating and tax relief goals of President Obama's stimulus plan while cutting less-essential provisions -- many of them worthy in themselves -- that are better left to the regular appropriations process.

Stinkin' RINO.

Grrrrr.

I really, really miss Santorum.
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

Horseshit.  It's still the Liberals' Grab Bag Bill.  To support this travesty in any form is equal to spitting in the face of every honest decent American.

I hope the politicians who see this through all burn in hell.

Oh, so it's been posted here, too. Just re-read it, and it still makes no sense to me. Then again, he IS the quintessential RINO.

Leftist ideology there - any action is preferable to none in the name of progress. Others have told me he's impossible to contact right now, too busy selling out his own country and party.

He should become a dem, he's just as stupid as they are. No, he's worse than they are, if he truly believes that a bad action, this pork bill, is better than no immediate action. The dems know full well what a POS this bill is, that's why they want the Repubs on board, to share the blame. Take a month or more to pass a decent bill consisting of tax cuts and some limited spending to get it right. A few more weeks won't hurt that much.

you would have thought that pat toomey scared him enough back in 2004 to make him think twice before he pulled something like this again.

He's probably not running again; what's he got to lose?

I read that he is thinking about running for governor in 2010.

He's not that bright.  He just sees it as a mandate by the people to continue doing what he's been doing.

These folks never learn until they've been defeated...and even then they sometimes don't get it.

Anyone know his email address and phone number?

Time to flood his old, stupid, RINO ass.

He nearly lost in the primary a few years ago. Bush campaigned for him then; otherwise, he would be gone already. You would think he would show a little party loyalty.

Santorum also campaigned for him over the more conservative Pat Toomey. Some here (in PA) say that Santorum selling out Toomey kept conservatives home when it was Santorum's turn, and he lost to that empty suit Casey.

Well, today, he voted for the new Eugenics, hidden within this bill and CLEARLY pointed out to him this morning. The man is a fool, there is no excuse for his vore. Gave his word! What part of his oath of office did he forget? Gave his SACRED word there, didn't the prick?
