As the poster seems to greatly emphasize defense spending, I thought this was interesting:

Table 15.5 — Total Government Expenditures by Major Category of Expenditure as Percentages of GDP: 1948–2006

In 2006, the budget was 31.8% of the GDP; defense was 4.2%, interest was 2.0%, Social Security and Medicare were 7.1% and other federal payments to individuals was 5.1%.  This would make defense expenses about 1/3 of social expenses.

The year I was born, 1959, the budget was 27.3% of the GDP; defense was 10.6%, interest was 1.3%, Social Security and Medicare were 1.9% and other federal payments to individuals was 2.7%.  This would make defense expenses 3x social expenses

The whole chart is available...but it sure doesn't prove any of the DUmmy's certainty that defense expenses are running up our deficit.
