2007 Maryland Blue Crab Harvest Second-Lowest On Record - WP
Advertisements [?]Last year's catch of blue crabs from Maryland waters of the Chesapeake Bay was the second-lowest on record, as environmental damage, drought and past overfishing helped drive down the state's most valuable seafood harvest, state officials said yesterday.

About 21.8 million pounds of blue crab was taken by watermen during the April-to-December season, officials at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources said. That was about 6 million pounds less than in the previous year and not much more than the all-time low, 20.2 million pounds in 2000.

"We're concerned about the health of the blue crab fishery and about the health of the blue crab itself," said Lynn Fegley, a fisheries biologist who oversees blue crab programs at the department. The "fishery," in this case, means the industry that depends on the crabs.

In response, Natural Resources officials said Maryland would soon begin seeking comment from watermen, scientists and other government agencies about the possibility of altering harvest rules. "We need to figure out a way to rebuild the population of crabs in the bay," said Frank W. Dawson III, an assistant secretary of the department. "And that's really going to take a long-term plan."

About time Marylanders got smart and realized that republican governors are NOT the way to go. Hopefully with O'Malley in the state house we can get the Peake cleaned up!

Dumbass.................it's not due to pollution and the Bay is cleaner than it's been in many years. The majority of the lower harvest is the lessened demand as imports have replaced fresh wild caught American seafood. It's not just in the crab market. hell Maryland has been getting over 50% of it's blue crabs from NC for years, so this isn't just something new.

Also the use of cull rings in crab pots have brought the law of unintended circumstances...........the damn crabs have changed their sizes to get in and out of the cull rings.

As for prededation...............have ya'll seen how many damn turtles there are now??

This is one of the problems of having all these damn turtle, whale loving people in charge at NMFS :censored:

According to the WP article, pollution is a factor in the decline of the Maryland Blue Crab population...

Among the problems confronting the crab population: Pollution creates "dead zones," where the shellfish struggle to breathe. Warm weather has contributed to die-offs of underwater grasses that crabs use as nurseries. And for years, scientists have said watermen were taking too much of the bay's crab population.

Yeah that's great, but just try and pay attention........okay. I stated that the bay is cleaner than it has been in years. I never said pollution didn't have an impact. Though what kind of pollution and how much of an impact.

Now lets decide what is pollution and what's not............Sea Grass beds have been drying in many places......some by pollution , though most not.  The majority of sea grass die off is a result of turbity, not pollution. Also blaming warm weather(global warming) for SG die offs is absurd.

Dead zones can come from many factors and have been happening for a long time. However, low DO (dissolved Oxygen) doesn't effect crabs as much as it does finfish.

Then the great catch all.............overfishing...........what a load of shit. Actually natural prededation is doing wonders to lower the Blue Crab populations.

My intent in this thread was not to argue or debate but rather to highlight the fact that DUer claims about pollution being the cause of the depletion in the Maryland Blue Crab population were based on what the WP article in question indicated.

No that primitive likely lives in the bay area and believes it's polluted worse than when the Deleware was on fire
