White House Lawyers Look to Limit Commercial Use of President

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama’s popularity makes him a marketer’s dream. Now, the honeymoon may be over for those trying to profit from his appeal.

White House lawyers want to control the use of the president’s image, recognizing the worldwide fascination about Obama’s election, First Amendment free-speech rights and easy access to videos and photos on the Web.

“Our lawyers are working on developing a policy that will protect the presidential image while being careful not to squelch the overwhelming enthusiasm that the public has for the president,” White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

Gee, I wonder what sort of things they will try to limit.   :whatever:

The Big "0" wants his cut of the profits.

Better get your limited edition, electrically heated, fury, Big "0" toilet seat before they're outlawed.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

I only think this is a good idea if they make it retroactive and include President Bush and make it a felony.  Let's go arrest all the libtards with demeaning images and phrases on their shirts and bumperstickers.

Don't see this going much of anywhere, you can't get much more 'Public domain' than what he is...of course he could try to get Congress to actually change copyright and trademark law to suit his taste.  Can't use just an executive order to actually change the law, though.

Ironically, this is the most Hitlerian thing he's floated yet, because IIRC royalties on Der Fuehrer's image as used on stamps, portraits, coins, and every other damned thing in Germany from 1933-45 were a constant and lucrative source of cash for Hitler and the Party.
