Quote
WASHINGTON -- President Obama is considering nominating Republican Sen. Judd Gregg as his commerce secretary, officials in Washington and New Hampshire said Thursday night.

Senior Democrats say the New Hampshire senator is among the top of a list of those considered for Obama's Cabinet, although they emphasized that no move was imminent. They spoke on condition of anonymity because no decision has been made and they were not authorized to discuss the administration's thinking.

Gregg was the GOP's chief negotiator for the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry. That alone would deliver him a tough re-election bid in a state that has no state income tax and a "Live Free or Die" motto that permeates a state that has proved increasingly tough to Republicans.

Gregg would be Obama's second choice to run the commerce department. His first pick, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, took his name out of consideration amid a grand jury investigation over how state contracts were issued to political donors.

A Capitol Hill leadership aide said Thursday evening that Obama has talked with his party's leaders about the move, which could put Democrats within reach of a fillibuster-proof majority in the Senate if New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch were to name a fellow Democrat. The Senate seat from Minnesota remains undecided, with Sen. Norm Coleman and challenger Al Franken remaining in a close, court-based contest.

Pretty tricky move on Obama's part.  I hope this Senator turns down the nomination.

He's one of mine.  Sadly, he might take it.  He knows he's fighting an uphill battle in 2010, probably against Lynch.

Well, dependant on how badly things bomb over the next year, 2010 might not be such a battle for him.

Not tricky at all, completely transparent. I bet even the DUmmies support this nomination.

Doing it ONLY to create a fillibuster proof Senate. If Judd takes the job, he needs to be drummed out of the paerty before the sun sets that day.

NOt only will it give the dems a solid 60 seats should Franken prevail but if a republican is commerce secretary any failure of Obama's stimulus plan would be hung on the necks of "conservative economic theory" not Obama.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

Well, dependant on how badly things bomb over the next year, 2010 might not be such a battle for him.

Actually, if it were held today, he'd lose, and badly.  Lynch is a 'Rat, but he's a popular one.  Add that to the fact that this state has shifted left faster than the flatlander Massholes/New Yorkers/etc can move here, and you get the idea.

Frankly, I would rather have ditched him and kept Sununu.  Shaheen is going to be an utter DISASTER as a Senator--probably worse than when she was governor.  They don't call her "Queen Jeanne the Spending Machine" for nothing.

No, the frightening part about this is, I see Gregg actually doing it, despite any deals the GOP tries to make with him.  Traitorous bastard.

Bingo! Hope the Republican's got enough sense to understand this.

hopefully, he sees what's going on for what it is: setting him up as sacrificial lamb for when the economy fails, and setting the Senate up to be filibuster proof when his seat comes up for re-election.

He should refuse this just for GP

According to the report I just read on CNN's website, Gregg's replacement will be his chief of staff, Bonnie Newman.

Chase her even when she's yours.
That's the only way you'll be assured to never lose her.

So they name a replacement who has two years to "be effective" before running for re-election with much lower name recognition?  As opposed to a guy who was governor of the state?  They may have kept the seat in the same party for now, but I guarantee you they're looking at 2010 and have a Dem all picked out to run against her.

How long, if he's approved, til he's asked to tender his resignation or had the failure of the "stimulus" blamed on him?
