Questions on the Invisible Fence

Anyone have any experience with these? My parents need one for their Lhasa that I gave them a while back. They're also getting one of these mini-dogs when they get bigger.

...and her brother and sister went to my brother-in-law and sister-in-law and their kids:

So, my parents have 3.3 acres, but the fence doesn't have to be around the entire yard. Anyone know how much they cost?

I don't know anything about them, but they look an awful lot like the vicious dog that attacked that former French president dude. 

Are you sure none of them are clinically depressed?   Could be dangerous.  :-)

Training them to it takes a lot of patience and effort.  We got one for our Rottie a number of years ago, and while she was an incredibly smart dog, she didn't take to it very fast.  She'd often hit it, then shock her, and she'd freak and run up and down the entire perimeter getting shocked the whole time.

We adopted a 7 yo Shepard/lab mix over the summer and she took to the fence w/o much trouble - you have to stick to the training routine that took about 3 weeks.  Over the course of a month or two she would get shocked from time to time.  I can't remember the last time she zapped herself.

Yes I did shock myself and yes it is one hell of a jolt - do a search on youtube and you'll get an idea.  But your dogs'll have a lower power collar.

Cost was about $230 plus the $70 for 4 hours RENTING AN EDGER at home depot.  I stressed the edger part because you do not want to try and dig it in by hand.  Another tip if you pull the edger backwards instead of pushing you get a perfect slice in the ground - though you will get a lot of dirt i n your face.

Took most of a weekend - my neighbor owns the local Toyota dealership and he bought the actual "Invisible Fence" spent over $2,200 for somebody else to do the work.  He says "They also do the training." That's a lot of money to dig a small trench and have someone you don't know electrocute your dog(s).

Odin, I'm a little skeptical on that price. 100 bucks for the unit, the collar, and the wire to surround 3.3 acres? You can't even get speaker wire that cheap.

Of course, some dogs just don't seem to take to it.  My roommates lab, which was a great dog, but perhaps not the brightest... was just never able to grasp it.  They do usually work pretty good though  :cheersmate:

I have an invisible fence for my dog.  We have over 3 acres and I needed to keep her on our property.  It is the best damn thing we have done.  It took about 3 weeks to have her fully trained but it was much easier than potty training, if you ask me.  She has never been happier since I had it put in.  She can run and enjoy being out doors and I don't have to worry about her out here in the country.  It has completely changed her demeanor and her obedience.  She comes quickly when I call her and she is much more attentive. 

That is just my experience.

We noticed a huge attitude improvement as well.  I only know of one time when she zapped herself to the wrong side of the fence.  She just sat at the end of our driveway barking for us to let her back in.

We had trouble with the standard collar and upgraded to the "stubborn dog" collar the takes a 9 volt, multiple levels of "taze"  :tazeme: and it not only beeps when the dog gets too close it vibrates, letting the dog know to back off.  They do make small collars for smaller dogs.

Sounds like your neighbor didn't train the dogs all the way and just assumed they would stop when shocked.




Rebel:  I found our old box again I think it was $230 +/- but it is the PetSafe brand; found both online and in stores.  An extra roll of 500 yds of wire cost $25 (or $12 @ home depot for the same stuff)

There's also a radio fence that one puts in their house and then places a collar on the dog. When the dog gets out of range, it'll activate the collar. No wires. If I recall, it has about a 90ft radius.

Yep, sounds like they didn't train the dog correctly.

The company I used came out and installed the fence and then showed me how to train her.

She is a small dog.  You have to be consistant but it will work, especially the younger they are and more trainable they are.

Our Great Dane doesn't have a collar.  He never leaves the property and with the little one on the fence she keeps him right in line.  LOL  Make sure you read up on the breed to see what training method is most effective with them and then if you are going to do the fence yourself makes sure you do everything thoroughly.  If you get it in successfully you will LOVE the freedom and so will your dogs!!

I am definitely glad for this thread. I need to find a way to keep our golden retriever out of the pond (she loves to eat the algae, which then makes her sick). That's in the summer. In the winter, the ice may not be thick enough and I don't want her out wandering around on it. She weighs almost 60 lbs. now and that's enough to go ker-plunk.

I didn't want to put up an ugly-assed fence, so I'm considering the invisible fence idea. Training Belle won't be a problem. We've been pretty good about training her and she responds well.

Beauty about it is, you can turn it off. During the summer, when she's eating algae, you probably want to turn it off. ...and, on those hot days, she can take a dip. Last thing you want is for her not to know how to swim. My dad has a different problem. A hellion for a dog that likes to run from him (Still VERY young), and dumbass f'n morons who like to drive 60 MPH down a dead-end cove. We had a Bull Mastiff that became damn near crippled because of this, and a neighbor who became damn near dead.
