Three days ago I removed some meat from the freezer and it thawed, and put it in the fridge but did not use it. Tonight (three days later) I decided to put it back in the freezer. I noticed that some liquid had separated from the meat, but the package is very airtight. Normally I would toss it to be safe, but this is organic meat. Not only did it cost a lot, but I despise wasting food, especially animals. (I'm close to vegetarianism, but not 100% there. That is the reason I end up wasting meat; I feel guilty eating it. Yet I continue to buy it periodically.)

ON EDIT:

It just occurred to me, I'm positive--absolutely certain--I've wasted much more meat out of guilt and not wantint to eat it (and sloppy buying habits) than out of actually eating the damned meat to begin with. At least that has been the case for the past three years or so. I don't know why it's so hard just to bite the bullet and quit buying all meat. Anyway, just an afterthought.

"Organic Meat" ? What meat is inorganic ?

Anyway...

Refreezing meat is something that I was told to never do, unless you refroze the leftovers. Which in turn could be reheated once.

It depends on how long the meat has been thawed and at what temp it was stored.

I've refrozen meat on several occassions with no problems.

I've always been told no.  Once it's thawed you should cook it and then you can freeze the leftovers.

Mrs. doc says that you can refreeze meat so long as any part of the meat in the package is still frozen.........once completely thawed, no.

That's what I've always adhered to also....otherwise, it has to be cooked first.

Well now, when we're talking about refreezing once-frozen meat, are we talking about how refreezing it merely affects the taste (when it's finally cooked), or does it present a real health hazard?

If it merely affects the taste, no big deal, at least to me.

I've always heard it's a bacteria field.

Just heard the other day, that uncooked hamburger that's gone "old" is full of bacteria....and is quite good to flush down the toilet if you have a septic system. Helps introduce "new" bacteria into the system and speed up breakdown.

refreezing meat

I myself always thought it was bad because of bacteria problems. I would cook it then refreeze it.

Although it didn't specifically mention re-freezing thawed meat, the training I got from the North Carolina Department of Health taught us that your food is safe as long as the temperature doesn't rise above 40°. 

I've done it with chicken and beef with no ill effects when I've defrosted too much meat to use at one time.

Hey neighbor (where's a damn wavy smiley ... oops, not that one ...) That's kind of good to hear.  My foodsaver vacuum sealer is getting old and cranky, so I'm not as good about separating and sealing before freezing
