Obama Administration Moves to Halt Guantanamo Trials
« on: January 21, 2009, 06:16:06 AM »
And so it begins........................

Quote
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba -- Military judges on Wednesday will consider motions by the Obama administration to suspend the Guantanamo war crimes trials for 120 days during a review of the system for prosecuting suspected terrorists.

The motions, filed late Tuesday at the direction of President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, will be heard in the cases of five men charged in the Sept. 11 attacks and of Canadian Omar Khadr, who is accused of killing an American soldier with a grenade in Afghanistan in 2002.

Obama has said he will close the military detention center in Cuba, where the U.S. holds about 245 men, and he had been expected to halt the widely criticized war-crimes trials created by former President George W. Bush and Congress in 2006.

The motions to suspend the trials came the day of Obama's inauguration. Before Obama was sworn in, a military judge adjourned the war crimes court until Wednesday, noting the future of the commissions was in doubt.

Quote
There are war crimes charges pending against 21 men being held at Guantanamo, including the five charged with murder and other crimes in the Sept. 11 case. Judges would be required to suspend the other cases as well, though hearings may not be necessary.

Eric Holder, the president's nominee for attorney general, has said the so-called military commissions lack sufficient legal protections for defendants and that they could be tried in the United States.

A human rights group at Guantanamo to observe this week's session of the war crimes court welcomed what appeared to be the looming end of the special tribunals.

"It's a great first step but it is only a first step," said Gabor Rona, international director of Human Rights First. "The suspension of military commissions so soon after President Obama took office is an indication of the sense of urgency he feels about reversing the destructive course that the previous administration was taking in fighting terrorism."

Jamil Dakwar, director of the human rights program at the American Civil Liberties Union, said it was a positive step but "the president's order leaves open the option of this discredited system remaining in existence."

I guess this is how it's gonna be :thatsright:

Anything the ACLU applauds has to be bad for the country.  :hammer:
"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

A payoff to the trial lawyers that supported him.
Might as well put a few hundred (or thousand?) of his buddies on the permanent federal payroll as defense attorneys.
They will keep "trials" churning through the court system for years. :censored:

Taking bets on the following outcomes:

A) After the 120 day review the Obama administration makes token changes to the proceedings but says they are pretty air-tight and the trials will continue as the final fate of Gitmo is decided.

B) The trials are permanently suspended drawing outrage from animals-posing-as-humans rights groups bleat and bray because the detainees are being held for years without trial pending their relocation out of Gitmo.

C) The trials are suspended and the animals-posing-as-humans are shipped to the US where physical security is a nightmare and the trials are a circus and none of the evidence against them is admissable or open to discovery. Bush is blamed because he botched the war leaving Obama is a bad position.

That parts for certain.

I heard this morning that one of the first things he did this morning is have a teleconference with the top brass to tell them to start planning for withdrawal. This before he sat through ANY classified meetings pertaining to the security of this nation and the true threats we face, many of them WE don't even know about.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

Well, the Exalted One does have to suck up to the moonbats to some level, largely because he expended a fair amount of political capital on his selection of a huge assortment of Clintonistas and other more "moderate" libs.

Nope, it's full speed ahead for His Holiness. He won't stop till he hits a brick wall.

Recall that the military tribunal process has twice passed Congress as the preferred manner of dealing with these terrorists.  Barack Obama opposed it as a Senator, but it received bipartisan support on both occasions.  In the second and current version, the process includes the right to appeal through the regular federal appellate courts.
