Long term use of NSAIDS has been known to cause tinnitus....... Ibuprofen is an NSAID...

so is piroxicam (Feldene), along with naproxen (Naprosyn), indomethacin (Indocin), ketoralac (Toradol), meloxicam (Mobic), and I'm sure there are others I'm not so familiar with.

BEG, if you aren't around loud noises, can hear fairly normally except for the tinnitus, and have no other complaints about hearing difficulties, I would most likely chalk it up to a side effect.  That doesn't mean you should just quit taking your meds, talk to your doc first.

Thanks Doc, I called the doctor and he told me to stop it even though I had stopped a couple of days before I called him.  Do you think the tinnitus will go away?  It is so annoying, it is driving me nuts.

well, there is a "therapeutic" level of any NSAID that needs to build up, and then a half-life for your body to dispose of it... IOW, it might take a few days or more, depending on how long you took it.

Went to the doctor today with my Mom Doc, and he is sending me to an ENT guy.  He said an ENT is the one who would decide if I need to go further and see an otologist or neurotologist  (I think that is what he called it).

Heck I'm not sure what he said.  I took my two girls to the doctor today, they ended up having sinus infections.  Anyway I told our GP about my rheumo sending me to an ENT guy because of the tinnitus and at first he was kind of dismissive.  Said they wouldn't be able to do anything for it anyway.  That I wasn't taking the piroxicam long enough for it to cause the tinnitus.  Then I told him how I hear my heart beat in my ear as well.  Like what it sounds like when you listen to a baby's heart beat when you are pregnant.  Then he freaked out and started listening to my neck.  I reminding him of my weird autoimmune disease and that I don't have a pulse in  the left side of my neck and that I have stents on the right side.  He then told me to go to the ENT because I have weird freaky medical things.   :p

I've had it my entire adult life. You get used to it like you do any constant noise. Matter of fact I hear it now that I'm thinking about it because of this thread  :-)

I hear 4 distinct sounds constantly.
1. a buzzing sound like locusts .
2. a chirping sound.
3. the more normal ringing.
4. the sound you hear underwater when a boat is near.

Hey tinnitus sufferers (shut up tess :p ) I found a link to a site that has some of the different sounds that people hear when they have tinnitus.  I hear the 2nd sound fairly loud in my right ear 24/7, actually it is a cross of the 2nd and 3rd sound.  I also hear the last sound (I hear them both at the same time) that sounds like your pulse/heart beat but I mainly hear that at night when I'm laying down to go to sleep.

I've been wondering for years now if what I'm hearing is really tinnitus. It is, actually, though for me it's extremely high pitched. No thudding (actually, that sounded like jackboots  :rotf: ) or pounding. And some of that sounds like a modem going off.

Background neurological activity, eh? What happens when I don't hear tinnitus anymore? Does that mean I'm dead?
