Tony Dungy trades football for family, social work

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Tony Dungy defied one myth Monday: He does show emotion. He also stuck to his principles. With tears in his eyes and his voice cracking, Dungy said goodbye to the Indianapolis Colts and the NFL, then, in typical Dungy fashion, looked optimistically toward life's next challenges.

For the Colts and their fans, that means chasing another Super Bowl title under Dungy's successor, Jim Caldwell. For Dungy, it means spending more meaningful time with his family and on volunteer work.

"Don't shed any tears for me," Dungy said after announcing his retirement. "I've gotten to live a dream that most people don't get to live. What phase two will be, we'll find out. But phase one has been awfully special."

It was a day for the 31-year NFL veteran to laugh, cry and share memories with many of his friends.

Dungy informed the assistant coaches in the morning, met with some players throughout the day and concluded by trading hugs and tears with team owner Jim Irsay and team president Bill Polian.

I like the coach, but despise his team...especially their "cry baby" quarterback.

Can't stand Dungy.   A little late on the family thing too.

Really? Why? I don't think I've ever seen anyone that didn't like and respect Dungy. Hell, I don't think he's ever done anything to make them not like him.

Really? Why? I don't think I've ever seen anyone that didn't like and respect Dungy. Hell, I don't think he's ever done anything to make them not like him.

A lot of things, but his moral superiority nonsense got a little old and played:

Quote
Meanwhile, Dungy, as reported by The Tampa Tribune (hat tip: Michael David Smith at FanHouse), made a clear reference to Belichick in his talk:

Then someone asked if anything happened last season that he wished he could include in the book. What followed was vintage Dungy. He seized the opening. He brought up the videotaping scandal with the New England Patriots.

“We talk about how important it is to do things the right way and have integrity so that when you do win, people can never ask that question,” he said. “That’s the great thing that I’m happy about with our team.

“Yes, we won. But no one is really going to ask, ‘Did they cheat? Did they do things the right way?’ I think our record speaks for itself and if you’re a true champion, that’s the way you’d like it to be.”

End note: Dungy’s reputation as a moral authority was called into question in January by Bob Kravitz of The Indianapolis Star.

After Dungy chose to come back as the Colts’ coach this season, Kravitz wrote:

I think that by returning to the Colts, and doing so after his entire family moved out of Indianapolis and back to Tampa, Fla., for reasons he prefers remain private, Dungy has revealed himself as something of a hypocrite.

As one of the chief spokesmen for All Pro Dad, an organization dedicated to strengthening the bonds of fathers with their children, he has spoken passionately about the importance of men putting their faith and family first, before football and all else.

So I don’t understand:

Piped in crowd noise anyone?

Security Guard Claims Colts Enhance Crowd NoiseBOSTON (WBZ) ―

The NFL may have concluded that the Colts weren't cheating against the Patriots on Sunday, but one of their own security guards is allegedly telling a different story.

A day after some unusual sounds were heard during the Colts-Patriots broadcast Sunday, the NFL issued a statement saying what sounded like simulated crowd noise at the RCA Dome was actually created by the CBS production crew, not the Colts.

But WBZ Photojournalist Bryan Foley says an unidentified RCA Dome security guard told him Sunday that the Colts do enhance the crowd noise.

Foley has been shooting sports for more than a decade. He was covering the game for WBZ-TV and claims the noise in the RCA Dome was deafening when the Patriots had the ball.

"It was almost silent when the Colts had the ball," he said.

The noise was so bad he asked a security guard about it.

"I asked him, 'Do you go home at night with a headache? Because it's early in the first quarter and my head is already hurting.'"

"He said, 'I don't know if you know this, but they actually pick up the crowd noise and pump it back through the P.A. (public address system)'"

WBZ Audio Engineer Charlie Lucci said it wouldn't be difficult to enhance the crowd noise.

"If you wanted to add crowd noise to any environment, if you were pumping something out, into the P.A., the announcer that kind of thing, there are recordings available of crowd noise; or you could make one yourself and you would just add it to whatever you're feeding into the public address system."

It's not the first time Indianapolis has been accused of such tactics. The Pittsburgh Steelers complained about the same thing after a 26-7 loss at the dome in November 2005. Since then, other teams have informally contended there is artificial noise pumped into the dome.

Apparently the sainted coach Dungy was the only party who was completely oblivious to the deafening crowd noise in his stadium when the opposing team has the ball.
