Officials Turn Down Franken's Request in Minnesota Race

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Democrat Al Franken was quickly turned down Monday when he asked Minnesota's governor and secretary of state to issue an election certificate that would let him take office in the Senate.

In letters the campaign sent to Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Mr. Franken's lawyers argued that a seven-day waiting period for issuing the certificate after an election has passed and he should get the signed certificate. But the state officials said their hands were tied by state law and they couldn't act.

Mr. Franken led Republican Norm Coleman by 225 votes after a statewide recount that was completed Jan. 5.

Mr. Coleman is suing over the result, claiming there were irregularities on Election Day and during the recount.

Minnesota law prevents officials from issuing an election certificate until legal matters are resolved. But Mr. Franken's legal team argues that federal election law entitles Mr. Franken to receive the certificate before the lawsuit is settled.

"The people of Minnesota are down a senator in the U.S. Senate. This is an opportunity for Governor Pawlenty and Secretary Ritchie to ensure the interests of all Minnesotans are represented in Washington," Franken lawyer Marc Elias told reporters in a conference call. He didn't rule out a lawsuit.

Right on Coleman.  If you can't keep the ****er out, at least hold him back as long as possible.

The mass insanity continues -- why would anyone choose a has-been comedian who hasn't been funny since 1981?

The only time I can think of is when Hannity plays the audio of his radio show. He didn't get a single phone call then, and his show only went downhill from there, heheh.

You're thinking of Alec Baldwin, I think.

Isn't it true that Franken was the writer of the infamous SNL Tar Baby sketch? Haven't we come a long way? Back in the day, noone could become a US Senator with something like that in his background. I guess now only conservatives can't get away with it.  :whatever:

Heh, well in that case, Franken was never funny (although he'll be hilarious if he loses).

Nope.  Never.

Maybe we can get him shut down as an excess CO2 emitter.

Wouldn't Franken technically be representing CA? He certainly can't be representing the fine folks in MN.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Apparently he is a big hit up on the range, must be all the lead.

I'm not so sure about that.  I think Noone really voted for Franken.   :uhsure:
