Crossdresser leads police on high-speed chase (Conn.)

A man dressed as a woman led multiple police agencies on a 25-mile, high-speed chase Friday starting around 8 p.m., police said.

The man, Richard Famiglietti, 39, of 175 Westfield Ave., Ansonia, was at River's Edge Apartments on Sharon Road in Waterbury when a witness spotted what he thought was a half-naked woman being forced into a van.

"He believed there was an abduction in progress," said Wolcott Police Capt. Domenic Angiolillo.

The witness tried to block the driveway to prevent Famiglietti from leaving. Famiglietti ran over a snow bank to escape. The witness got in his vehicle and followed Famiglietti north on Woodtick Road toward Wolcott.

The witness's 911 call was routed to Wolcott police and Officer Chris Charette managed to swerve behind the van — and in front of the complainant who was following behind — and turned on his lights after Famiglietti turned onto Todd Road.

Famiglietti began to increase his speed on Todd Road to Meriden Road, where he entered Waterbury. Wolcott police called for help from Waterbury police as Famiglietti sped down Pierpont Road, East Main Street and onto Interstate 84 at Exit 25A. He headed east on I-84 and got onto Route 8.

"We pursued the vehicle based on knowledge that we believed a woman was in danger," Angiolillo said.

Famiglietti got on and off the highway numerous times in Waterbury, trying to evade police. Eventually he got back on Route 8, reaching speeds of 90 mph. After running over spike strips set up by state police and blowing out a tire, he got off the highway in Seymour at Route 67.

Famiglietti stopped on Route 69 in Woodbridge, got out of his van and fled on foot. He went through the woods and hid in a patch of thorns, police said.

When police apprehended him, he was covered in scratches and blood. Charette took him to the hospital for treatment late Friday. Wolcott police planned to charge Famiglietti with interfering with police, engaging police in pursuit and driving with a suspended license.

He struck at least one other vehicle in Seymour and may face additional charges from other jurisdictions.

Police said Famiglietti didn't want to stop because he was embarrassed about being dressed as a woman.

The incident gave Wolcott a chance to try out its new $3.7 emergency communication system. Because of the new radio towers, dispatchers were able to communicate with Charette all the way to Woodbridge, Angiolillo said.

In October 2007, Famiglietti was charged with five counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, use of drug paraphernalia, interfering with an officer and third-degree larceny.

I would put money on one of those 'other jurisdictions' being Florida.  :-)

Maybe he lent it to the cross-dressing trucker on COPS.
