Laura Bush unveils George W. Bush state china

WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Laura Bush showed off a new gold-rimmed set of official George W. Bush state china on Wednesday, with less than two weeks to use it before the family packs up for Texas.

The $493,000 set was inspired by a few pieces of green basketweave-patterned French china in the White House collection believed to have come from James and Dolley Madison. It was paid for by a privately funded trust of the White House Historical Association, which also purchased a second, less formal set.

Laura Bush said the china has been in the works for several years and the family had hoped to be able to use it, but the process took longer than expected.

"So I hope that the next family, and I know they will be happy to have these two sets, as well, to be able to entertain their heads of state that come in, as well as for their closest family and friends," she said in the White House Family Dining Room.

The Bush family moves out of the White House Jan. 20, the same day President-elect Barack Obama is sworn in.

Officials did not believe the new china would be used for President Bush's lunch Wednesday with Obama and former presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter, because it is still being unpacked.

Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton also unveiled official china shortly before leaving the White House. That set and a famously expensive one commissioned by Nancy Reagan are the plates now used for large events, but the Bush china has more place settings — 320 — than either of those.

Okay, I don't care for the magnolia one, but the formal one is very nice.

Here's the Clinton china

And the Regan china

It looks like a takeoff of the Reagan china. I like it. I actually like all three. Not so crazy about the magnolia. (Yes, it's the state flower of MS but not on china please!)

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

It's similar, but I don't particularly like the Regan china because the red seems "too much."

The Monroe (on left) and Johnson have the same eagle on them

I think I like the Wilson (on left) or FDR the best, though I do like the Clinton china too.

You forgot the picture of the one they had commissioned especially for the incoming Democrat President...

And it's the casual set for informal meals in the residence.

I don't like the magnolia china.  I think I like the Willson and Regan china the best.  Although I'm really not into so much gold, I like silver better.

Other than the fact that I feel strongly that we won't have nearly the same problem with the state china from this administration "walking away", as it was wont to do in the previous administration, what picture is on a friggin' plate doesn't twitch my rat's ass-o-meter nearly so much as what FOOD is on the same plate.

Laura Bush favors the Clinton over the Regan, because there's more flexibility for flowers, flatware, etc.  She only had the two to choose from for the state dinners (they're the only two full sets), but with the new Bush china there's now a third.  Now they actually check people when they leave state dinners to make sure no one took any of the china.

Yeah, I can see why.  The Clinton china isn't too bad and neither is the Bush formal china for that reason.

Are you serious?  I thought you could only get those by calling that phone numer that shows up on late-night TV commericals.  I have to ask... who ordered the plates?

The ShamWow! is probably selling better than that ridiculous thing.

I have to say I like that the best.  Very impressive.

And the Clinton china (much like his Presidential library) looks like another doublewide.

I saw those stupid cozy sack blankets at Bed, Bath and Beyond the other day.  I had to open one up to see what they are made of because I knew they had to be chinsy.  They are made of that cheapy felt like material that feels all yucky on your feet and hands.  I couldn't stand to have that material next to my skin.
