Well, it's close, but I'll have to go with fire.  The wheel, inclined plane, and lever are pretty damned good, but fire just has quality of life enhancement going for it that the others can't beat.

You know, in all the books and magazines of anthropology and sociology that I've read, there seems to be a substantial plurality--not a majority, but a significant minority--who believe the amphora was the most useful thing invented by man.

It had to be invented; it wasn't anything that already existed that man finally figured out how to use, such as fire or penicillin.

How did I miss this thread?  My vote is steel.

If anyone paid attention in third-grade science, steel is the result of combining raw iron with carbon using heat.  It's awesome stuff.   :cheersmate:
