Has Anyone Visited Normandy?
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:08:15 PM »
I am going on a Trans-atlantic European cruise in May and one of the offered excursions when we arrive in France is a trip called "D-Day" which visits the American Cemetery of Colleville overlooking Omaha Beach in Normandy.  It is the most expensive excursion at $200 pp.  Is it a once in the lifetime thing I should see???  I would love to pay my respects to those soldiers who paid the ultimate price.
This is what part of the excursion says "Your final stop will be at Pointe de Hoc where three companies of the 2nd Ranger Battalion climbed the 100-foot cliffs on D-Day to capture the strategic position. After a full day of remembrance, return to Cherbourg."

Should I go?

Yes!!

I have not gone, but some friends went on a trip a few years ago that followed the path of the DDay invasion. They all said that Omaha Beach was such an incredibly emotional place.

I think I'd pay that much to visit such a historical location.

Not what I was thinking.

I have visited Normandy drop zone at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina a few times ..... Just long enough to roll up my chute and get the hell off the DZ!   :-)

PS, Hope you really enjoy your trip!  You would be following in the footsteps of REAL HEROES!

Yes! $200 sounds like a good deal to me for an excursion!

You'll have precious memories too.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

True...the probability of me ever visiting France again is very low.  I think we will go...and I'll take lots of photos too....Oh, and I'm sure I'll get emotional.  I have to do it for my friend who recently died.  He was a proud vet and one of the most patriotic americans I ever knew.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a dear friend, whom sacrificed quite a bit.  It sounds like a wondrous opportunity to pay respects, a tribute, and witness such a monumental locale from history.  Regardless of if you go, enjoy a wonderful relaxing cruise with friends!   :cheersmate:

Go and do this. You will not regret it, indeed; you will be a changed person afterwards.

There is NOTHING more significant to this man than visiting and paying respects to American military fallen in foreign countries.

While you're there in France, swing through eastern France and visit St. Mihiel as well. You won't ever forget your experience - guaranteed.

A local radio personality went to Normandy and said it was, indeed a life-changer -- and he is a cynic.  He also said that in that area of France they still revere Americans and keep the graves of our fallen heroes tended and fresh flowers on them.  I envy you this and for $200 I would do it in a New York minute.
