Enough is enough! We are NOT, I repeat NOT, "straight DUers", "gay DUers", "white DUers", "African American DUers", "female DUers", "Christian DUers", "young DUers" and so on. We are all just members of the Democratic Underground. We are simply people that share most of the same values. George Bush, Karl Rove and Dick Cheney could all become members here and they would be unable to do as much damage to this board that those harmless looking labels have. The damage goes far beyond just this message board. The politics of idendity had done huge amounts of damage to our nation. When you start playing the ID game, there is an under lying message of looking out for your own. That flies in the face of the values of fairness and equality for all. There is a very good reason while our nation rejected the idea of segregation. Seperate is never equal.
You know Barack Obama did not run as an African American or a half white candidate. Barack ran as an AMERICAN. If he had run on his racial identity he would have lost. True freedom and true equality ONLY comes when people are freed of the labels and groupings. Only when our nation looks at the true person, does all forms of inequality and discrimination end. As DUers we are all supposed to be committed to the idea of equality and justice for all. Yet we here at DU are some of the worst offenders, when it comes to creating the divisive atmosphere, that allows bigotry and inequality to prosper.

DU is just part of what people here do...usually a small part. Away from DU, each and every one of us is an individual, with unique problems and situations.

Each of us comes to DU with all of that as our experience, and each of us may wear our labels as we wish.

Your call to drop our identities is unrealistic and a little arrogant, it seems to me. I am who I am, and will share whatever labels I use to identify myself here and everywhere else I go. You are free to use none of that information. You are free to ignore me completely.

DU is not a place of uniformity. It is a forum full of individuals. That's not going to change.

Sometimes I'm an Irish-American DUer, sometimes a white DUer, sometimes a male DUer, sometimes a straight DUer, sometimes a Catholic DUer, sometimes a middle class DUer, etc.

We all have multiple backgrounds, sexes, ages and beliefs. We all have economic and social ties that differentiate each other.

What scares me a little bit is, if WE aren't clear on that how are we to convey it to others? And if we don't get that idea to spread, then how can we ever make that idea a reality, and actually have a country where all are equal and all are "just Americans" because separateness is over?

We hold on to pigeon-holed identities at the cost of the equality we seek.

It's a little frustrating because strengthening the habit of thinking in these sub-identities runs counter to the argument we try to make - that all should have the same rights and be treated no differently. Reinforcing "different" doesn't help that cause.

To get the rights sought, at some point a choice on that has to be made.

You see, the cboy4 primitive has some spunk; during the Democrat presidential primaries, while the 0bamaite primitives were pushing and shoving the supporters of the worthier candidate for the Democrat nomination off Skins's island, the cboy4 primitive stoutly held his ground.

The cboy4 primitive was especially harassed, hounded, hectored, humiliated, by the 0bamaite grazing primitive, the rich kid 0bamaite "jgraz" primitive, but stalwartly held his ground.

It was remarkable.

Too, one has to give the cboy4 primitive some credit for that he actually works for a living, which can't be said for all the other gay primitives, most of whom live off of social security disability; they're "disabled" because they're "depressed," that sort of thing.
