MLB Network gearing up for New Year's Day launch

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - When the MLB Network signs on New Year's Day, it'll be the largest launch in cable TV history, with 50 million households on cable and satellite TV.

It's also coming out at a time when the climate hasn't been all that good for league-owned sports channels -- or for TV in general. Tony Petitti, the network's general manager and former executive vp of CBS Sports, recently spoke about the launch.

WHAT'S THE FIRST THING WE'LL SEE ON MLB NETWORK?

Tony Petitti: We'll have a "Hot Stove Live" studio show that will catch people up on a daily basis. It'll be our first show, so we'll obviously recap what's happened in the off-season since the World Series ended. Then on the first night of the year we've got the Don Larsen (1956 World Series) perfect game, the original telecast of that. It picks up in the second inning and goes to the conclusion. It's a great piece of baseball history; the original commercials are in there, too. It's Mel Allen and Vin Scully doing the calls.

... and with the "East Coast bias" in play it should be Red Sox and Yankees all day, all night, all the sweet time.

Excellent.

I saw that one mentioned on MLB Trade Rumors.  I've had it bookmarked for a while.

I know it's the off season, but so far, the MLBN is pretty boring.  there are all sorts of rumors in the wind, but most of what I saw over the new year holiday was jimmy rollins taking about stealing home in a studio made to look like a ballpark . . . which is pretty ghey in the first place.

they broadcast video of don larsen's perfect game in the 56 series, but since he did it against the dodgers, I wasn't interested in watching. :-)
