Happy New Year--sorta...

Quote
Issued by The National Weather Service
Portland, ME
3:17 am EST, Wed., Dec. 31, 2008

... STRONG WINDS AND VERY LOW TEMPERATURES WILL MAKE FOR BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILL VALUES TONIGHT...

TEMPERATURES WILL FALL INTO THE SINGLE NUMBERS AND TEENS DURING THE EVENING HOURS AND WILL CONTINUE TO FALL OVERNIGHT. WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO PICK UP OUT OF THE NORTH... GUSTING OVER 30 MPH AT TIMES. THESE WINDS COUPLED WITH THE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL MAKE FOR BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILL VALUES THAT WILL BE BELOW ZERO DURING EVENING CELEBRATIONS. THE WIND CHILL VALUES WILL THEN FALL TO AS LOW AS 29 BELOW ZERO BY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING.

BE PREPARED FOR BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILL VALUES IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS. DRESS IN LAYERS AND KEEP EXTRA CLOTHING AND BLANKETS IN THE CAR.

Just one more reason to stay home and celebrate tonight.  No need to go out in that.

It's going to be cold here today and tonight, so we'll be staying in tonight also.

The weather should be OK, but we're staying in. We'd rather have a quiet night together.

We're meeting a large group of friends at a social event.  I would prefer to stay home but the Spousal Control Unit says otherwise.

No matter what the weather conditions, I never, ever, ever go out New Year's Eve.

Cold and very windy with sporadic snow in the wind for now.  Not going anywhere tonight (although my daughter is going over to the boyfriends house...they are picking her up and bringing her home).  Mr Flame and the boys and I will just hang out and play the Wii or watch a movie.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to go to my sister's.  Not sure if that will happen or not, as she had drama in her life yesterday and things are up in the air.

We are getting 6-8 inches of snow today, so we are staying in tonight also.       I barely stay awake for midnight anymore.

The guys at the bar reason (correctly, for the most part) that storms are better to try to get home after a few because the cops are already busy with other accidents, cars in ditches, etc., and even if you are slipping around, hey--it's SNOWING!

That and when you live in a town of 30,000 where on any given Friday/Saturday night there are FOUR cops on patrol at any given time...

I'm certainly not encouraging it, but if people really knew just how thinly spread the "thin blue line" really was...

Finally, isn't it strange that when I was living in SoCal, all the idiots, gangbangers, etc, like to pop off a few hundred rounds at midnight, despite people dying/shot nearly every single New Year's Eve and all the stories on the news.  Yet here in the middle of nowhere, nary a gunshot to be heard at midnight the last two years.  Go figure.

I think Red and I slept through it last year. And he's on night shift this week, so there's a good chance the same thing will happen this year.

I'm a big party pooper.....I feel so old.  :bawl:

My crazy stupid neighbors next door love to shoot off fireworks on New Years Eve. Which in and of itself I could care less about, but instead of doing the smart thing and keeping them over the field, they insist on shooting them up over my house. My house is a million years old and a tinderbox to say the least. One spark on my roof and POOF. Needless to say that 4th of July and New Years Eve the police know that they will most likely be summoned to cruise by my place a time or two. Hopefully with the weather forecast for the night (bitter cold with 40+ MPH winds) it won't be an issue.

Damn Sparky, now THAT is cold! We're supposed to get down to 13 degrees with a 7 degree windchill here in the State Of Corruption, but I wouldn't be able to handle going out in that. Wow.

Me and the Mrs. are probably gonna celebrate the new year at home, but by the time I get off work, the countdown (5...4...3..2...1) will be watching the clock not for the New Year, but when it's time to go home. "Yay! Off work! Oh, yeah... eerrr... HAPPY NEW YEAR!" lol

The wind is whipping hard here!!! It was around 45mph the last time I checked. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

No going out for me. I've already been to the grocery store and Costco. I could bunker down for a long time if I had to.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

There isn't an especially large volume of snow falling now, but the wind is whipping it around quite nicely into some good-sized drifts.  The met tower at the plant currently says we're at 18 degrees with a 17 mph wind, for a calculated wind chill of +2 deg F.  At 12:30 in the afternoon.  And we're at the seacoast.  At my humble abode, it's a wind chill of -3 F.

Oh, it's gonna be a FUN night.  Like the lady in the AT&T commercial says upon seeing her children terrorized by T-Rex, "Yay!"

But, fear not!  Mount Washington is currently at +2 degrees, windchill at -23 F.

Quit your whining about wind chill. Wind chill means NOTHING IF one dresses properly for the weather. Of course, I'm enjoying a nice, sunny 60° day here in N Central Texas...

Its going to be 20 degrees tonight and clear with some wind. Going out to a local bar for a few hours with someone and then probably call it a night.

Currently 66 degrees here and according to Yahoo, the low tonight will be 47 with light and variable winds. Suckers.  :-)

I'm going to a friends house for a New Year's Eve Bash in a little while here. Last I heard, over 40 folks had RSVP'd. So it will be a good turnout but nothing like that nightmare Insight Fiesta Bowl Block Party in Tempe. I did that a few years ago and almost swore of New Year's Eve gatherings for good.
