What would YOU have done? I thought it was obvious...
I had ordered an expensive pair of ski goggles for my wife for Christmas, which were scheduled to arrive by the 23d at the latest. They cost nearly $200 (polarized and photochromatic lenses, change color according to lighting conditions). The 23d came and went, and by 5:00 pm no goggles, so I called the place I ordered them from.
My tracking number showed they'd been shipped, but that's all...no other info. UPS couldn't find them, suggested I call the shipper. They couldn't find them either. They apologized and promised to overnight a pair for Christmas Eve delivery. On Christmas Eve, the UPS man showed up and dropped TWO boxes on my doorstep. The original order, and the replacement.
But online, the tracking info still showed them as lost. I received an e-mail the day after Christmas from the dealer saying they still couldn't find them and apologizing again for screwing up my order. I was sick over the weekend, so today I was finally able to take care of the dupe order. I called the shipper and told them I received two pairs of goggles, and asked for an RMA and shipping label. The guy on the phone sounded confused. He said they still showed up as lost. "Nope. They're right here," I said. So he e-mailed me a paid shipping label and said "Wow, thank you for your honesty...that's unusual"
Why is that unusual? I would have loved to have a pair of these sweeeeeet goggles, too, but I could only imagine the bad karma they'd carry if I kept them. I the last think you need when sliding down a mountain at 30-40 mph is bad karma. Would you have kept them just because no one knew you had them? Just doesn't seem right to me!
Oh my. A quandary indeed.

10. No, I certainly wouldn't have kept them and you absolutely did the right thing, the only thing you could do. The second pair wasn't yours to keep and it would have been theft. Unfortunately, too many people want something for nothing and have an entitlement mentality that rationalizes such theft for them. You're right, that would have been bad karma if you'd kept them and it would have always bothered you.
I remember once when I visited New York City for the first (and, so far, only) time twenty-two years ago. I was in a fast-food restaurant in Manhattan and, after sitting down at the table with my food, realized that they'd given me too much change. I went back to the register and returned the extra money. They couldn't believe I'd done that and said that I "must not be from around here." I said no, I was from Ohio, and I didn't keep what wasn't mine. I also had been a cashier and knew the trouble they could get into if there was even a slight discrepancy in their daily totals.
Note to Lisa: don't bother sucking up to Pedro Picasso; it won't do any good.
Unless one's Pedro Picasso, Pedro Picasso has nothing but contempt for one.

12. If they'd given me shit over it, I would have kept both pairs.
However, since they were apologetic and honestly trying to make things right, they deserved not to be ****ed.

I thought the fear of being smited by a floating ghost was the only thing that would keep a person honest? That's what the Christians say...without God in your life, you'll just spend your days whorin' and stealin' and drinkin' and killin'. Now I'm all confused.
Seriesly, I'm surprised...I expected at least a few DUers to attempt to rationalize the keeping of the goods. I'm happy to see I was mistaken. Lots of good peeps here!
