Damn! All the old people are out shoplifting!
According to CNN, this is "a new disturbing trend." How ****ing sad are WE! 65 year old perps were arrested at a greater rate than teens in Japan. The two individuals they spoke re in the report had stolen food for dinner, she had none and the male had stolen medicine for an upset stomach. His wife is in the hospital. Security felt sorry for them, so maybe we'll see a trend in free stuff.
I dunno.
When I was a teenager, I worked in a mom-and-pop grocery store.
There was an old man, a wealthy old fart, who used to come in and try to snitch, of all things, lemons from the produce section.

1. The Message From Society Is Clear - If You Are Not Young, Healthy, Wealthy, And Thin
Then you are not fit to be a member and are left to scrounge any way you can.

4. Young, healthy, wealthy, thin. Strange society, not one in which I find myself to be very comfortable. The excitement in living has turned to the excitement for survival.
The lonestarnut's not very comfortable because she's not young, healthy, wealthy, and thin. That's all there is to it, nothing more.

8. Funny how it's not in ones best interests to get old, but everyone does, if one lives long enough.

2. Retirement accounts wiped out because you listened to educated business experts about how here and when to invest.
You worked hard your whole life, saved, bought a house, paid it off and watch it's value drop 50% in three months.
These people are not suckers. They are mad. They are fighting back the only way they can.

3. have they investigated this "trend"??? Do you think the word DESPERATION has any resonance or relevance to the so-called "trend"?? Good grief. People are suffering. It is not a secret that we are in the depths of a severe economic downfall... please tell me that people are making the connection with this new found "trend" and the increased hardship it poses on those who are least able to be self-sufficient or "pull themselves up by their bootstraps"... they may have no bootstraps - or have given them to their children. Or have just worn them out.
How sad are we if we don't recognize the bloody correlation between despair and desperate measures, and instead just produce a dramatic, superficial news story that has no deeper comprehension than it's own headline. Ugh. That's what's frikken sad, man...

6. There must be something we can do before Jan. 20th. How many will actually die between now and then as a result of desperation? 26 days.
