WASHINGTON (AFP) – Barack Obama will take the oath as US president on the same Bible used to swear in president Abraham Lincoln, the committee planning his inauguration said in a statement Tuesday. The presidential inaugural committee said the Lincoln Bible would be borrowed from the collections at the Library of Congress."President-elect Obama is deeply honored that the Library of Congress has made the Lincoln Bible available for use during his swearing-in," said Presidential Inaugural Committee Executive Director Emmett Beliveau in a statement. With Obama's swearing-in on January 20, the historic Bible with its gilded edges and burgundy velvet binding will see its first use during a presidential inauguration since 1861 when Lincoln, the 16th US president, was sworn in."The president-elect is committed to holding an inauguration that celebrates America's unity, and the use of this historic Bible will provide a powerful connection to our common past and common heritage," Beliveau said.

He could not have chosen a more divisive symbol. The South still hates Lincoln and those of us who love and respect his memory find this to be an arrogant effrontery by a dilettante posuer.
It's almost as divisive as his choice of Reverend Wright Warren to give the inaugural invocation. Is he deliberately trying to piss people off, or is he that stupid?
This is the "Community Activist" el Presidente, after all. I don't think he knows how to handle people who aren't screaming, rampaging mobs. Just wait until the ACORN Civillian National Security Force unveils it's new brown shirt and jackboots UOTD.
Be ready for my sig to come true.
I may be the only one here who says this, but nevermind his political affiliation I find it fitting that America's first Black President be sworn in on the bible of the President who made it possible for it to happen.
It might be fitting, if his ancestors included slaves and not slave owners, as has been rumored on his mothers side.
Being Kenyan, it probably means he is the relative of slave providers on his father's side.
That would mean that he has the supply and demand sides both met.
Well that may be true unless he lived in Deleware and a couple other states. The Emancipation thing was a recruiting tool for Lincoln. The war was not fought over slavery.............States Rights in a republic........and Lincolns people sent the Star of the West to start the war
So, I guess that means you are OK with this too -- I mean, this gesture unites us, right?
Not even close to being okay with it. Not even close to uniting. If you have something to say................say it
Whoa there big fella. Look at my original post about this. My point is this is divisive, no matter what individual feelings about Lincoln are.
You are correct and I guess I misunderstood you................though didn't you recently say something about Sherman getting a medal or such??
