My Weekend Trip Pictures (Pic Heavy)
« on: December 21, 2008, 08:23:33 PM »
I left Friday morning at 11:45am to head to my grandpa's for the weekend.

Things started off well on my 5.5 hr trip until I made it to

That was followed up by "Road Work Next 5 Miles"

The traffic finally eased up and I made it to Houston

I then made at stop at (I always stop at this same Whataburger every trip)

And saw this place I thought it said "Wings & Whores"

I got stuck in traffic again, but saw Leisure Inn the sign says "A Nice Place to Stay"

So, when I made it into Winnie, it got soooo foggy!  I've never driven in anything like it.  I tried to take a picture of a refinery all lit up at night, but the fog was too heavy.

Yesterday we had a family lunch all together.  I won't post everyone's picture, but here's one of my grandpa and his lady friend, Abigail.

My grandpa's dog, Gigi

One of my aunts drove me around and I took pictures, some are a little blurry.

These are some general pictures of Bridge City

This is my Grandpa's house and neighborhood.  Now the important thing to remember, is that all of these houses were flooded inside.  His house had 5 feet 3 inches of water inside and 6 feet outside.  So, even while the houses look okay from the street, inside they're all gutted down to the studs.  When I drove around, if you looked through someone's windows you could see there was nothing inside these houses.

My car is a little in the way

This is his FEMA trailer that he got a month ago, and his brand new truck he bought.  His old truck was in the garage when Ike hit.

This is directly across the street.  They're a really nice couple, have been living there as long as he has.

The front door will have to be replaced

My Uncle's house, down the street

Inside his house

Living Room

Kitchen, behind the plastic is the garage

One of the bedrooms

My grandparents made stain glass for years after they retired.  This is one they did.  It's beat up a little, chairs and everything else lifted by the water was hitting it.  Hopefully it can be fixed

The backyard:

The orange tree put out a bountiful crop this year, even well after Ike hit.

I could just love up your Gramps, his lady friend and his poodle.

Wings and Whores - who is the naughty one?  :uhsure:

The aftermath of floods.... oy, I am glad all I have to worry about is 70 below windchills, not much flooding goes on in that kind of cold. Although, I spose I could get hit by a small glacier or something.  :lmao:

Now, I know you're all dying to find out what a FEMA trailer looks like.  His is the handicapped version, hence the ramp.

This is looking to your left from the front door.  At the end there, that's a bedroom

The second bedroom.  He doesn't use it, but do notice the new red hot rod walker he just got.

The bathroom, the other end is a large walk-in shower.

The kitchen, notice the fancy new toaster (my Christmas gift)

Past the kitchen/living room is the other bedroom.  It's pretty tiny.  I can see two people living in there, but it's supposed to be for up to two adults and two kids and that would be a tight squeeze.  There's a little dining table, but I didn't get a picture of that.  Oh and he can look out the window all day and see his house:

And on a somewhat happier note, my cousin's next door neighbor has this in their front lawn:

I giggled every time I looked over there.

I left today, so here's the sights:

A beautiful refinery!

Why it's called Bridge City:

And in Huntsville, the giant statue of Sam Houston

And with that, it's the end of my weekend.  :)

Those bridges that go up and up like that give me the willies.

I'm sorry your grandpa is going through this.  Does he plan on rebuilding?

Yes, he's quite the cutie! When he started going to church again after Grandma passed away, all the church ladies would flock to him.  LOL!  He started spending time with his lady friend a few years ago.  She's a very very nice lady, everyone loves her.  And she's young, only 77 (that picture doesn't show, but she really doesn't look but late 60s).

Yes, Grandpa's signing the paperwork tomorrow and then the guy is going to start this or next week on the house. He's going to start on the work and then Grandpa will pay whenever he gets his insurance money (hopefully soon).  By the next time I go there, it'll be a whole new house!  The guy doing the work, is from church so he's trust worthy.

My aunt said the price gouging is crazy.  Someone charged an elderly lady $25,000 just to gut her out down to the studs!

Oh and speaking of freaky.  The fog was so heavy Friday night, that when I was driving I thought I was on the bridge (the one of the left in the pic), but then it didn't feel like I was going "up."  Then a few seconds later I saw the suspension cables!  It was freaky!  The worst was when I was driving and it was really pouring down rain and going over the old bridge (the one on the right), that was downright scary!

Nice pics Mia....

As for Bridge City, I couldn't ever live there.  I have disturbing nightmares about driving uphill onto high bridges but trying not to lose control of my car....I have no idea what this dream means but I have it every now and then.  That photo you posted looks like that bridge. :o

Well, there's two bridges now. The old one on the right in the pic is the scary one.  I'm glad it's one way now, b/c it would scare the crap outta me if it was two way, it has narrow lanes.  Then they build the other bridge many years ago, the one on the left.  The lanes are nice and wide driving over it.  I was young when they were building the new one.

Anywho, driving over the old bridge in the pouring pouring rain on the way to see my grandpa in the hospital...I'm surprised I don't have nightmares about it.  And my mom was trying to yap away while I drove, I finally said "shut up, I'm trying to concentrate here!"  LOL!

Thanks for sharing the pictures.  I'm sure a lot of people have already forgotten what the hurricane did to the area.

Your grandpa looks like quite the dapper fellow.  :)

He can apparently get ladies of all ages.  LOL!

I gave him this nice big hug when I left and told him I loved him.  And then when I was down the road, I realized that some of his Old Spice cologne rubbed off in my hair.  I could smell my grandpa the whole way home.  :)

You drove that close to my house and didn't even give me a call?  *sniff* .... I'll be okay I just need a moment.

Is there a reason you drove through hell ... I mean Houston to get there?  You could have shaved an hour off by cutting over on Hwy 190 to Livingston and go through there.  I thought you said, once upon a time, that you went that way?

I have been that way before, the Thanksgiving before last.  I try to stick to the regular highways, since I'm driving by myself just in case something goes wrong with my car and I don't end up stuck behind some truck going 55 on the back roads.  I can take 287 all the way pretty much, but I don't do that either.  I head straight down 45 to Houston, hop on the Hardy Toll Road, 610 to 10 east until Winnie.  And the time I went 190, it still took me about 6.5 hours to get there, but that was probably b/c of traffic for Thanksgiving.

Usually going from Huntsville to the Winnie/Orange/Bridge City area down Hwy 190 to Hwy 146 out of Livinston will save you about an hour.  Sometimes more depending on the traffic/construction south of us in Conroe, The Woodlands and Houston area.

Glad you had a safe trip, give us a shout next time you are around the Huntsville area and I'll buy ya a beer.
