The Dawgs demaned a new BMW!!!
« on: December 20, 2008, 07:04:35 PM »
SLW and I closed the deal on the replacement for our current 5 Series Wagon.

We got a 2007 3 Series Wagon.
http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Vehicles/2009/3/328ixdrivesportswagon/default.aspx

The old wagon had over 120K miles...new one, 12,100.  :-)

With our trade-in, it set us back a little under 25K. The car will be BMW Certified which means the warranty is good out till 2013.

And yeah...it's loaded.

But it is missing one thing SLW adores...the heated steering wheel.  :-)

I think she'll get over it.

I'm moving your thread to the Automotive forum.   :-)

Congrats.  I like BMWs.  Much more than M-Bs, anyway.  I have my eye on a 3-series that I may pick up after Christmas if I have the cash.

My son had a MB, back in his high-roller days before he was married. He had a lot of problems with it and got rid of it as soon as he could (and he bought it brand new). He's back to BMW's again, but his next one will be a Honda SUV to haul his baby and two boxers.

We got a good deal---I hope. They were going to sell it with the balance of the warranty (almost 3 more years), but talked them into certifying it, which will extend the warranty by another 2 years. It was brutal having the old '99 Bimmer with no warranty. The repair costs were killing us.

My SIL has a '92 5-series.  My brother is always replacing one thing or another.

I see nothing but SUVs and trucks for sale in this city.  Going window-shopping is no fun anymore.

The worst thing I've heard about BMWs is the mandatory 60k timing-chain replacement (ditto for Porsche).  It is "recommended" to drain and remove the radiator, water pump and alternator before removing the timing chain cover.  I remember my brother also complaining about some sort of suspension component.

It's still a station wagon.

Perhaps if you're looking for a new mode of transportation I could interest you in this:

A station wagon isn't a station wagon without the wood trim.  Even the Dodge Magnum is kinda hot.

My mom had a Chevrolet Celebrity with the Euro trim.  Now THAT was a station wagon.  Before that, all my mom and dad had were trucks.  My dad drives some boat of a Cadillac now. It's pretty sweet.

Wait until you leave the heated-seat button on.

I'll let SLW comment on that, I've never had a BMW before but some of those mileage thingys do grab ya. We should be pretty golden for some time though considering it's only got a little over 12 thousand miles on it.

That's not bad.  From what I've heard, is you need to be dilligent about the service intervals.  If the 24k interval says to change the brake fluid, then do it.  I would hope BMW has their shit together a little better than that, but you never know.  But I drove a 1977 733i with a six-cylinder and that motor was a horse.  I'm kinda sorry I didn't buy that car but it was heavy.

Maybe so but it still kicks ass when you put the hammer down. SLW took it out on the highway today and this little wagon can move.  :-)

The Germans state that it's not a "wagon", but a "touring" car or the "sportswagon". Oops, they did say wagon, didn't they?  :-)

It's just hard to haul the pooches in a sedan. The 3 greys won't be happy with the smaller wagon, but it beats sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck. (actually I wondered what we'd do if we needed a tow with the hounds in the car). It would be hard to put the 2 of us and the 3 dogs in the other seat in the tow truck.

Yeah, your station wagons are your "tourers" over there.  I guess they're just as embarassed about the whole station wagon thing as the rest of us.

Congrats on the new vehicle! Lovely one indeed, you wealthy repuke! :cheersmate:

I don't see now as an adult with kids how we ever went on vacation in my parents '71 Torino or their '77 Mazda RX-4 station wagon.

I love our mini van for vacations.  It's got 160K on it now...but it still got us down to Disney World and back at about 21 mpg.

Your parents had a '71 Tornio?

We always went on vacation in my dad's 77 Suburban.  Long trips are always uncomfortable, but this wasn't so bad.  The back was always loaded with goodies.

Yeah it was the Torino 500 like this one:

Except it was yellow with a tan interior.  First new car my parents ever bought.
