Just what I NEVER wanted! The ghastliest gifts ever

Glass boot vase, £29.95 [approx $40]. You might have thought the point of a vase was to display flowers in an attractive way so this glass boot hardly qualifies. One that's heading straight to Oxfam. www.presentsdirect.com

There are quite a few hideous gifts here (although one or two aren't that bad). I have never been an ungrateful type of person and the fact that someone remembers me is enough, but you'd have to put some serious effort into finding things this bad.

You people obviously don't get gifts from my dad's wife.  The other day my dad brought over all the crap she's been buying throughout the year for me.

1 nice thing - a fleecy fuzzy blanket.  I like that one.

Everything else:  Giant jar of Texas honey.  Seriously lifetime supply.
A music box that has twirling ice skaters to "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"
A candle - that stinks
These Christmas decorations that has a spot for a tea light, and a box of battery operated tea lights
A snowman stuffed animal
A small umbrella with a case
And last but not least - a pair of "slippers"  They're more like knee high with tassels and fringe and have leather on the bottom of the foot.

I'll put them all in a White Elephant gift exchange next year.   :evillaugh:

Worst gift was one of those typical holiday sweaters with a crochetted snowman on it...you know, the ones grandma's wear.  I was 20. :whatever:

Uh....ya'll remember that I got a box of hummus mix, a purple ski suit and some wooden cooking spoons one year from my MIL right? :-)

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Was she senile or thrifty? My elderly aunt gave me stuff when I was a kid that was so terrible that I threw it out as soon as I got home. She had a pile of wrapped junk gifts and my cousin, sister and I got luck of the draw. It was all bad.

Both..... :p

Seriously she is a strange bird, I don't know how my husband turned out the way he did.  I have learned to accept and embrace her although it has taken YEARS to get there.

That's probably what my DIL says about me, but I do give nice gifts.  :-) They did tell me not to buy the baby too many toys, but that money would be nice (a savings for college). But I want to buy cute little toys that educate his little brain so he can get an academic scholarship.  :-)

I got that for SR (but not autographed) and don't think he ever read it at all. It wasn't his favorite gift.

My Dad gets my kids savings bonds for their birthday and christmas. When my kids were smaller they didn't like it.  Now they my son realizes how much money he has in savings bonds he is so glad my Dad did it.  My girls know how much my son has now (and how much they have) and are excited that they get them too.

I'm going to have to look into one of those state sponsored programs where you can put money away for the kids and I think get some sort of a tax break. Not sure if the little one needs a SS #.

That was really nice of your dad to do that for the kids. My mom gave my kids $5k each after my dad died. She didn't add to it, but the magic of interest helped put them through college. I was forever grateful to her for that.

We considered doing the state sponsored deal but we were afraid of exactly what happened would happen, our son went to college out of state.  I don't know what happens with the money if you do that, I thought at the time my husband checked it out but perhaps he didn't...I can't remember.  My girls are going to college in state, it will be so much cheaper and closer for them to visit us often.  I've already told them they can't go out of state, I don't think I could handle them being that far away.  A boy is different somehow.   :p

I plan on getting savings bonds for my grand daughter each birthday.  That will probably be in addition to a gift she can unwrap and play with.

You wouldn't believe how much money my kids have just from my Dad doing this.  It is an excellent idea and I plan on doing if when I have grandchildren.

I think it is a really good idea.  If I may ask what denomination does he get each time?  I'm not sure how much I want to go with.

Can you still buy those things at banks?

I was in a room full of those the other day.  Office Christmas party and I was one of the youngest there.

He gets them in $100 denominations (sometimes $50) and gets them $200 worth every Christmas and Birthday.  I'm pretty sure he gets them from his bank.  My grandma (his Mom) also does it for them.
