As if I didn't already know what selfish pricks most Republicans are,
   
I had a stark reminder today.

At work I mentioned that we are having a holiday dinner tonight for a group of Iraqi refugees we have befriended here in our city. The Republican in the group said "Where do they live?" I told her and she said "Why, that's over by where I live" (I live in the same area of the city) I said yes, and their kids are in school with the kids in our neighborhood. She said "As a parent I don't know if I would like that or not."

I let that go, not knowing what to say. As if our kids being in school with kids from Iraq is somehow damaging to our kids?

Then she says "Well, are they WORKING? Or are my tax dollars paying their rent?"

If the person sitting next to me had not grabbed my leg under the table and given me a look, I might have exploded. Instead I calmly said "Actually one man I have gotten to know was a college professor in Baghdad who speaks 4 languages but he is working at McDonald's here."

The Republican said "Good, it's not as if we haven't done anything to HELP them."

The leg grabber then said "How do you figure invading their country, blowing it to bits and killing a million of their people is HELPFUL to them?'

The Republican changed the subject.

I smiled and squeezed my friend's leg under the table. Later she said to me "Those Republicans just don't get it, do they?"

Wow, a bouncy with a companion helping proud2blib out. I didn't think she needed any assistance shouting down freepers.

Don't know if that's a good thing or not. What languages? 4 different dialects of muslim? I think I read there are around 20!

In other words, she mentioned she'd seen an article in the paper about a group having a holiday dinner for Iraqi refugees and one of her colleagues, who doesn't wear her politics on her sleeve and is thus suspected to be a Republican, commented that was a wonderful thing to do for people so far away from home. Of course the old bat didn't hear that comment because she was too busy making up a story in her head to post on DU.

They're trying to validate their own beliefs by telling other DUmmies that people are coming over to their side, which makes them feel better, even if they're not true.
