whoa. whats THIS all about.

Yesterday morning, early, I posted an inquiry and explained to a few people that my family just found out, through dna analysis, that we are about 85% Ashkenazi jewish.

Of course, we had all been raised thinking we were some hybrid mix of european catholics, and vague references were always tossed about but never did anyone speak of being Jewish.

Well, looks like thats all changed.

So, I broke the news to my brothers and sisters, who all thought it was delightful.

We all figure someone back down the lineage was probably terrified of persecution and imminent death, so they converted to catholicism.

I called my brother today and asked him how he has been doing with his newfound lineage.

He said "Well, basically, my wifes family is freaking out."

"What??" I asked him "Whats their problem?"

"well, " he said "They just sat and looked at me, like they were in shock, and said 'you have JEW blood in you??' ". Now they wont even talk to me.

My brother then said "I had no idea there was that kind of hatred out there..wtf is this all about??"

(he also feels like we have been robbed of our identity.but I told him, meh, dont worry about it. Just learn what you can now.)

so maybe some of you can enlighten me..

so I can enlighten him. is this the kind of response out there when someone finds out they are jewish?

I would like to think this is isolated.

I dunno.

franksolich has known since he was a little lad, that he's one-eighth eastern European Jewish, the maternal grandmother of the immediate maternal ancestress.  No biggie.

It's something I discovered on my own; no one else had ever bothered mentioning it because it wasn't thought important or even relevant.  It just wasn't a big deal.

The only primitive who showed up at this bonfire's the primitive who swore to leave the United States if George Bush was re-elected in 2004, but who never did, alas:

1. Wow. That is MESSED UP. I'm sorry to hear it.

I still suspect the original posting primitive, the one who lit this bonfire, is stretching, concerning the reactions of the in-laws.  Primitives like to imagine "other people" are worse than they are, which of course is an utter delusion, and so exaggerate things.

BTW, how does one become 85% Jewish?  IOW, how does a 100% Jew marry a 70% Jew (or you make up the combination to come up with 85%) and they not know they were Jewish?

Primitive mathematics is mysterious.

Even mathematicians don't understand primitive mathematics.

I imagine the story's much like the stories of other immigrants who came here in the first half of the last century; they wanted to assimilate, and so did their best to hide their roots (although of course one can assimilate without hiding anything).

Or if the Catholicism pre-dates emigration to the United States, well, in eastern Europe, there were problems for those of Judaic derivation, and some took the easy way out (although frankly there were some who had to convert just to save their lives).

People can be silly about their national, cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

The Bostonian Drunkard has at rare times alleged himself to be distantly related to the 18th-century English statemen William Pitt the Elder and William Pitt the Younger.

I suspect if a DNA test were done on the Bostonian Drunkard, one would find him to be a descendant of Vasiliy Pittokovskovich instead, a shoemaker in Poland.

Considering that she is relying on "Data analysis" rather than direct evidence, she's probably pulling it completely out of her ass in the first place.
There are plenty of "Rosens," "Goldbaums," "Blumensteins," etc. that would have qualified for SS membership on blood purity because they are just German surnames, albeit ones that were extremely common with Central European Jews as well, and dollars to donuts her "Data analysis" consisted of deciding which the Central European names in her background were "Jewish" (Ashkenazi because them's the ones that were in Central Europe).

I tell you, Tanker, sir, if you ever want to go deep into your family history, hire a Mormon.

Any Mormon.

It's part of their religious responsibilities, to trace their families, and they're damned good at it.

Some years ago, I did income taxes for a woman who was (is) a Mormon, and she wanted to know how much she owed me.  I stated the standard price, and she said it wasn't enough.

Okay then, I said; I had all of these old family records, woefully incomplete.  How about if she looked at everything, and did some research?

Damn, she was good.

And complete; she must've connected me with one out of every four people in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  If mamacags here lives anywhere near Clarion County, Pennsylvania (she appears to live somewhere close to there), I'll bet a connection could be found.

The Mormons are indeed justly known for it, their interest has to do with a doctrine which amounts to post-mortem conversion and salvation of their ancestors, which being a matter of faith, they pursue quite rigourously indeed.
My maternal grandmother's family has an ardent geneologist who has tracked them all up and down the line and could probably give the Mormons a run for their money, of course her interest is limited to a particular line of Welshmen and their descendants who were very early settlers in Virginia and explorers westward from there.
