Pit Bull Takes Bullets for Family

(Dec. 11) - An Oklahoma City family is calling a beloved pit bull a hero after the dog took three bullets while fending off an intruder, KWTV reports.
Roberta Trawick said she was sitting in her living room when a man came through the front door, holding a gun. The family's pit bull, D-Boy, raced in from another room, ready to attack. The intruder then began shooting, hitting the dog three times before fleeing the home.

D-Boy is back with his family, having recovered from his bullet wounds.
"I'm sorry my dog got shot, but I still got my family and we still got our dog," family member Angelic Shoemaker told KWTV.
Police have not caught the intruder.

I saw this on TV the other day. The suspect is a Hispanic man in his late 20's to early 30's. There is speculation by OCPD that this was a botched drug/gang hit.

Pit bulls have a bad reputation because of bad owners. There are actually the kind of dog that protects people. I have read in old dog books that pit bulls were actually good dogs to have, especially around children. In fact they recommended the dog if you had children.

That is the general take.  P/B are perhaps the most diligent sentinels of all modern breeds.  But those great features also are why they are decried.  The same instinct protecting the "master" from a criminal also protects him from a 3 year old who is "attacking" the territory.

Biting criminal="good."  Biting 3-YO="not so good." The poor dog can't make the distinction.

My neighbor was just walking his 2 month old pittie....a grey one...never seen that color...absolutely gorgeous and so friendly (well of course, he's a puppy) I may not be too eager to pet him as he gets older of course.  But the guy said he's part of a champion bloodline for Show dogs...

ARe you sure about that...my understanding is that the dog would be just as protective of the "baby"..that they are known to protect every member of the family, not just the 'master'.
I never owned a pitt, and probably wouldn't...but I do feel their bad rep is a result of the Vick types that breed them for fighting.  It's a seriously awful type of animal abuse.
