Storm Sirens "non functional"
« on: December 09, 2008, 11:03:05 PM »

Quote
According to preliminary reports, two tornados touched down in Grayson County Monday night.   In most cities warning sirens were used to alert residents about the fast moving storm.  One city, however, that didn't hear didn't hear any sirens was Denison.

Denison's fire chief used the expression "non-functional", confirming the city's siren's have not been working for nearly six months.

"This storm came in so quick and so rapid the sirens, I don't believe if they had been fully functional would have done any good that was a very fast moving storm and the warning we could could have gotten out.  I don't believe it would have did a lot of good." said Weger

Tis true. The city of Denison's sirens did not go off. What I will say is I truly appreciated the local news and the internet last night. Sherman's sirens were working fine this past summer (a city right next door to Denison. They used to be called the "Twin Cities" way back when). The damage was terrible. The old bowling alley, which has been closed for a long while, was "exploded". There is NO doubt in my military mind that this was the result of a tornado. Initially, the weather guessers were suggesting that it was straight line winds. Champion Cooler was also destroyed. I have a few pics on my cell phone that I will attempt to upload tomorrow. Fortunately, nobody was hurt or injured by the storm, at least not any significant injuries. I had heard that one family had lost their dog. It seems like it's probably time to turn this stuff over to the county vs the city.
