Her second husband, Claus von Bulow, a British society figure of Danish-German noble ancestry, was convicted of attempted murder by injecting her with insulin, only for the conviction to be overturned on appeal. He was then found not guilty at a second trial.

The remarkable saga was made into the hit 1990 film, Reversal of Fortune, which starred Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons as the high-profile couple.

Mrs von Bulow died in a private nursing home in New York after never regaining consciousness or showing any signs of brain activity. Mr von Bulow, 82, lives in London where he writes arts reviews.

At least von Bulow has the good sense to avoid sports memorabilia shows.
