Greg Maddux to announce retirement Monday
« on: December 05, 2008, 05:07:58 PM »
Quote
Greg Maddux is all done.

The four-time Cy Young winner will announce his retirement Monday at the baseball winter meetings in Las Vegas.

Maddux turns 43 in April. He is eighth on the career wins list with 355, and went 8-13 last season with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The announcement about his retirement came Friday from the office of his agent, Scott Boras.

I saw him pitch last season at Chase against the D-backs. He was still going for his 350th win then.

I saw carlos perez beat him at turner field 5 years ago.  that's a bad thingie, even if it WAS 5 years ago. :-)

the game will miss him.

so, jen, what are the d'backs up to this off-season?

They denied Adam Dunn salary arbitration. Good riddance. He was useless.

Randy Johnson has said goodbye.

Speculation is Orlando Hudson isn't going to hang around either.

Nothing real exciting yet.

40 home runs, 100 RBI's, and a .386 OBP?  Hey, that's "useless" I could live with.

Well, when you're traded to two teams in one season, it's time to hang it up. He was a damn good pitcher back when he played for the Braves alongside John Smoltz, Steve Avery, and Tom Glavine. With the Cubs... yeah he was still good, but he's been slipping the last couple years but that's what happens with age. I suspect he'll be inducted into the HoF without much rebuttal.

Just one of the great all-time pitchers. Baseball needs more "Greg Madduxes".
