Raise your hands. How many here want to see Osama bin Laden....
captured or killed?

Ok, then if you want that, as I do, what is your problem with President-elect Obama's strategy to shift forces from Iraq to Afghanistan?

Oh yeah. Because DU is ALL about hunting down and killing terrorists.  :whatever:

1. Well, for one thing, he's not in Afghanistan.
And I don't favor assassination, no.

9. Thousands of troops will not capture bin Laden.
Using Afghanistan as a "staging area" for one more fruitless show of force is wrong in so many ways, it's a whole new flavor of wrong.

Afghanistan has to be de-militarized immediately. It needs law enforcement, peace keepers and nation builders. It doesn't need GIs. That would be the same stupid mistake we've made since the 60s and I don't know about you, but I'd at least like to make a new mistake, just for the variety.

Bin Laden will be betrayed by an insider if he doesn't croak first. He will not be captured by a battalion and pretending that a battalion is the answer to this is as wrongheaded as invading Iraq was.
And once again she proves why she is such a cunning stunt. How the **** are you supposed to "De-Militarize" a country without using troops to do it? Anyone?

2. Ideally, bin Laden should swing from a rope in Ground Zero in NYC
after that whole fair trial formality has taken place, of course.
Oh Hay a little bit of testicular fortitude.

bin laden stated two times that 9/11 was not his doing but you're welcome anyway.
I guess we should just take him at his word then. :mental:

To think we call ourselves a civilized society...

6. We don't need to occupy a country and send 30 thousand more troops in to a country that isn't even where bin Laden is. Pakistan is the place to invade if you want to get him, you want troops in Pakistan too? All this for one old guy?

10. It's a little late for that.
Granted, it would be nice to see that asshole brought to trial, IF indeed he is the asshole who murdered 3,000+ civilians in NYC and DC. I have my doubts. I can't stand terrorists, but believe they should be brought to a world court, rather than 'eliminated'. We need to shame these ****ers, by putting them on display at the Hague in order to show them that the world of semi-law abiding citizens has nothing but contempt for their ilk. Bombing them just makes them martyrs.
That is one of the dumbest things I have ever read at DU. And thats some braod fricking territory there...

12. Imho, the very worst thing we could ever do to the people who did 9/11
is to treat them with dignity and give them a fair trial.

Because then they would have to own their shame.
Okay I stand corrected about the dumbest thing...

13. Nope. I cringed the first time I heard him say that.
We cannot roam the planet killing people we don't like, no matter how bad they are. And I doubt we've been invited to do so.

That being said, there may very well be good reasons to be in Afghanistan. Our lack of presence may lead to a situation they would prefer not to have. Again, only if invited.

Justice isn't accomplished with the muzzles of guns.

27. I want to see him and his enablers and co-beneficiaries, Cheney and the Chimp, in the same courtoom.
Butchering more Afghans and mass murders of wedding parties really won't get there, no matter how much blood of innocents you want to spill.
Yeah let's never forget who the REAL enemy is DU.  :bird:

I'm more for hanging him but assassination suits the hell outta me.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Can't we do both?

Hang him, but shoot him on the way down.

Maybe one of the primitive lurkers can help me out... what is the difference between a sniper team turning OBL's head into a pink mist with a rifle and a sniper team laser designating his cave so a 500 lb laser guided bomb can turn his whole body into a pink mist?

I know I'm just a knuckle dragging, bitter Conservative who clings to his guns and Bible. There is obviously some nuance I am missing here.
