OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper won a rare suspension of Parliament on Thursday, managing to avoid being ousted by opposition parties angry over the minority Conservative government's economic plans and an attempt to cut off party financing.

Governor General Michaelle Jean -- the representative of Queen Elizabeth, Canada's head of state -- agreed to Harper's request to shut down Parliament until Jan 26. Parliament was reconvened just weeks ago after the October 14 election.

Harper's request for suspension was unprecedented. No prime minister had asked for Parliament to be suspended to avoid a confidence vote in the House of Commons.

Such a vote had been set for Monday and the Conservatives almost certainly would have lost it, and faced the possibility of being replaced by a coalition of opposition parties.

The Queen of England is involved.  This is some pretty serious stuff, eh?

Pretty funny shit. They just had an election where Harper increased his Minority govt, so now all the other loser parties have banded together and are trying to have a coup and take over. I think Harper should actually let them try to bring his govt. down, because the latest opinion polls  show that he would win a MAJORITY govt if they had another election. Canadians are not happy that the people they voted out a couple of years ago are maneuvering to take over again. It's just going to backfire on them.

I'm assuming that this No Confidence vote was being force on him by a partisan Parliament, mostly against the will of the people?

I think so.  Harper's government just won an election, and the Liberals stood a good chance of paying dearly at the ballot box, if they forced an election.  Harper's Conservatives don't have an outright majority, but they probably would, in the election that would have had to been called, and the Liberals would have been further behind the eight-ball.
