Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Does anybody else here suffer from IBS? I have a very bad case of it, and have tried numerous medications for it. The only things that help are muscle relaxants, and they make me too sleepy to take when I am working. I's appreciate any ideas. My main symptom is incredibly violent and painful cramping that can go on for hours, and sometimes days in a row.

Fiber, fiber, fiber, fiber, fiber.

But no; primitives don't like fiber.  Primitives want pills.

Especially if the taxpayers are paying for them.

3. Opiates helped me with the pain and the diarrhea. Now I'm on Ultram, a med that hits the opiate receptors but isn't quite as constipating. Muscle relaxants zone me out too much. I only take them when I'm desperate and know I can be non functional for a day or two.

Everybody is different, and you might have to explore different medications to get real relief. I take it you've been scoped and both Chron's and ulcerative colitis have been ruled out. If not, do so. Severe cramping like that isn't a hallmark of IBS unless you're in a flare and then it doesn't happen for days or weeks at a time. The treatment for Chron's and UC are different from those for IBS.

Geezuz.

If the warped primitive were a share of stock, her value just declined from $500 per share clear down to 5 cents per share.

Damn.

There's a lot of primitives at this bonfire boasting of their irate bowels, but none of them are Primitives of Prominence, so never mind.

The 4-5000 residents of the island would on their own wreck the medical system if they ever got their wish for "free" healthcare.

Somehow I think that once they were declared unfit to participate in productive society they would all miraculously get healthy though.

I have suffered from IBS since high school.  Not too long ago my rheumotologist thought it was Crohn's (because my history of autoimmune disease) so he sent me to a Gastroentronologist to do some tests.  After the tests the gastro thought it was in fact IBS and not Crohn's but wants to retest me in a year.  Mine tend to happen in "clusters".  I'm fine for months with not one bad day then it hits me and it can last for months.  One day I'm fine then the next few days I have it then I have a good day only to have it again the next.

Yes a lot of it has to do with diet but there are other factors as well.  I take Bentyl when it gets really bad but you have to take it 30 minutes before you eat and when you are out and about and it hits you it seriously sucks, it ruins your day and is very painful.  When it is really bad I can't eat out and I have to know where the bathroom is everywhere I go.  I have never had a doctor suggest Opiates for pain and diarrhea.  I have taken Ultram for Migraines before but never for IBS.  The Bentyl doesn't have a cumulative effect yet I choose to take it only when it is really bad because it does make me very sleepy.  I have lived with this basically my whole life.  Warpy is wrong, severe cramping is a sign of IBS.  It is unbearable until you go to the bathroom.  Once you go the pain is gone so maybe that is what Warpy was referring to, the fact that the OP said the cramping goes on for hours and lasts for days.  I have never had that happen.  That is why I don't understand why someone would take an opiate for the pain if once you "relieve yourself" the pain is gone.  It makes more sense to take an antispasmodic like Bentyl to keep the pain from even occurring.

Don't do what I did.
The wife was concerned that I don't get enough fibre, because I am primarily carnivorous.
She got me these "fibre pills" consisting of something called psyllium.

I misread the directions, which said "Take 4 a day", I took 4 at once.

BIG MISTAKE.

Been there.

Done that.

Yep, I've had problems with this since having my gall bladder removed in 99. Was told it would be temporary and lucky me, it wasn't. I've seen a great improvement though since changing my diet, but I still can have a reoccurence at any time, usually in the mornings. I've never taken anything, since like you said BEG, once you 'go', it is relieved. But you are right, diet does relieve it quite a bit, but it does not alleviate it alltogether. I can still have an occasional occurance and I have no real warning factors before I eat that I will be getting an episode.

Can't the messiah lay hands on the primitives and heal them?

Note to DUmmies.......opiates are exactly the WRONG meds to use for IBS......they paralyze the bowel muscles, and make the problem worse........
