Bamalot: Obama Drafts Star-Studded Short List for Cabinet

Kennedy, Powell, Kerry considered for top jobs

By Xana O'Neill
Updated 10:07 AM EST, Thu, Nov 6, 2008

[excerpt]

President-elect Barack Obama has drafted a star-studded short list of cabinet candidates, with political heavyweights Caroline Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Colin Powell and John Kerry among the most notable names being eyed by his transition team.

Possible Picks for Obama Administration

Obama already has offered Illinois Democrat Rahm Emanuel the position of chief of staff. It is likely that Emanuel will accept -- and now Obama is focusing on filling out the rest of his team.

The President-elect is strongly considering Robert F. Kennedy to be the head of the Environmental Protection Agency and is weighing Kennedy's cousin, Caroline, for the position of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations -- a move that would please Sens. Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy, Politico reported.

If Obama chooses to oust Robert Gates as Defense Secretary, Gen. Colin Powell has been short-listed as a candidate. Powell's endorsement of Obama fueled speculation that the former Secretary of State would be considered for a Cabinet position.

I'm sure Colin Powell will get something. The timing of that endorsement was way too self-serving.

The idea of the Kennedy's, especially the environmental one, is revolting. Guess I'll take my lumps and switch more of my 401k to cash. It's being caught between the proverbial rock and the hard place. If you have all cash you'll be hit by the monstrous inflation that's looming over us. If you stay in securities, you could lose it all by the market reacting to what's coming with Obama. It's a lose-lose situation.  :banghead:

Sorry, I don't see Kerry giving up his Senate seat for a free ride in Bamalot.

Once Fatass Ted croaks, Kerry's the senior Senator from Taxachusetts and I, quite frankly, think he finds that the type of gig he can get his jaw around without resorting to making ketchup for Teresa.

Powell apparenty is trying to decline any role, I think he wants to enjoy his life as it is and also realizes accepting a Cabinet post would be widely viewed as payola.

Robert Kennedy would be a nightmare for the EPA, we might as f***ing well just declare America bankrupt now and get it over with, because that loony bastard would bring power generation and industrial production to a dead stop if he got his hands on the controls at EPA.  One Kennedy in any major position is (more than) enough, Obama's nuts if he picks both of them.  Caroline would fit in perfectly at the UN, I'm not sure how much damage she could actually do there that any other Obama appointee wouldn't also do, so that would probably be the safest way to check the 'Kennedy' box.

I dunno.

I wonder if William Ayers is eyeing a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Someone else suggested perhaps U.S. Secretary of Education, but I doubt that--William Ayers probably wants something bigger, something more pretigious, and one doesn't have to be an attorney to be on the U.S. Supreme Court.

I think O is gonna steer clear of Ayers throughout his first term. Second term, you bet. But the top priority will be to get reelected and there's just too much love between O and A to be comfortable.

The former female 3 Star that used to be the Army G-2 is in line for some position in The Rookie's cabinet.

There were signs at some Obama rally a few weeks back down in Quantico that billed her as the next SecArmy.

I think he's more of one of those self-loathing Jews like the ones that protest "Zionism" and attend meetings in Tehran to speak out against Israel. Palestinians are OK with those....useful idiots.

Has to be better than going to work every day to have The (Uppity) One remind you of where you're not sitting.

I also remember in 2006 when the dems took control the traditional and ceremonial "power walk" from one end of the capitol building to the other saw carry left on the sidelines as Reid and Pelosi walked on their own. It was quite the dissing of the man that had been their nominee just 2 years prior. I shall always remember the phot of Reid and Pelosi boldly striding forth. The camera angle looked up at them ever so sightly to make them appear as giants while Kerry was in the distance looking rather forlorn.

I would like to think Obama is surrounding himself with those he imagines to be weake personas. Most dictators hate anyone with populist gravitas sucking up their oxygen. Saddam executed his best general who was rather popular. Obama strikes me as the type...at least political assassination wise.

Did you notice not a peep from the MSM about that ? That the selection of Obama as President elect is not only historic for who Obama is, its also historic as triggering the biggest day-after market drop in history.

Ive also noticed that a 52% win for Obama is a 'landslide' while a 52% prop 8 result in CA is a slight margin.

I thought the same, however the Globe is reporting that Kerry is actually lobbying for this position. :loser:

I think Kerry realizes that Massachusetts is inches from collapse, and since everything is under control of the Democrat machine, there is nobody left to blame. I think Obama will soon follow in Patrick's footsteps when he learns the same thing.

Don't know if it's true or not but it's been floated here locally that our Governor Janet Napolitano will be either Attorney General or Sec of Education.

The latter post just cracks me up. Arizona ranks 48th in the quality of our educational institutions here. Of course Obama would think she was great for that job!  :-)

The fact that Janet Napolitano resembles - superficially, as well as politically - the last DemonRoach Attorney General named Janet ought to bode well for her.

Do you remember when Obama said we'd have to learn to sacrifice? This is probably what he had in mind.

I had someone tell me that Americans don't need big cars, should follow the government's recommendations for appropriate temperature settings for AC and heating, and shouldn't drive too much.

The only positive to her leaving for Washington is our Secretary of State would take over as Governor and she's a repuke.  :-)
