Alas, Palin's National Political Career is Dead

Flashback before the election:

Quote
Even as John McCain and Sarah Palin scramble to close the gap in the final days of the 2008 election, stirrings of a Palin insurgency are complicating the campaign's already-tense internal dynamics.

Four Republicans close to Palin said she has decided increasingly to disregard the advice of the former Bush aides tasked to handle her, creating occasionally tense situations as she travels the country with them. Those Palin supporters, inside the campaign and out, said Palin blames her handlers for a botched rollout and a tarnished public image — even as others in McCain's camp blame the pick of the relatively inexperienced Alaska governor, and her public performance, for McCain's decline.

"She's lost confidence in most of the people on the plane," said a senior Republican who speaks to Palin, referring to her campaign jet. He said Palin had begun to "go rogue" in some of her public pronouncements and decisions.

"I think she'd like to go more rogue," he said.

The emergence of a Palin faction comes as Republicans gird for a battle over the future of their party: Some see her as a charismatic, hawkish conservative leader with the potential, still unrealized, to cross over to attract moderate voters. Anger among Republicans who see Palin as a star and as a potential future leader has boiled over because, they say, they see other senior McCain aides preparing to blame her in the event he is defeated.

"These people are going to try and shred her after the campaign to divert blame from themselves," a McCain insider said, referring to McCain's chief strategist, Steve Schmidt, and to Nicolle Wallace, a former Bush aide who has taken a lead role in Palin's campaign. Palin's partisans blame Wallace, in particular, for Palin's avoiding of the media for days and then giving a high-stakes interview to CBS News' Katie Couric, the sometimes painful content of which the campaign allowed to be parceled out over a week.

"A number of Gov. Palin's staff have not had her best interests at heart, and they have not had the campaign's best interests at heart," the McCain insider fumed, noting that Wallace left an executive job at CBS to join the campaign.

Post-election we see the McCain camp throwing her under the bus like Obama at a family reunion.

This is happening because--like all things McCain--he won't STFU and listen to the people he claims to represent. He wouldn't fight on real issues like the market meltdown, Wright etc. Instead he had a confused, mumbling, stumbling geriatric campaign.

Well, excuse the @#$% out of us and our girl if we decided not to follow THAT modus operandi! Palin not being McCain was the only thing that got 40 million of the 55 million GOP voters to show up.

The fact is: THEY @#$%ed up. THEY chose this man that was reviled by the GOP base years before the primaries came up. The RINOs and the democrat saboteurs in New Hampshire gave him his win and the MSM built him up as inevitable. Of course the NYT et al did what we conservatives knew they would do: they called him the savior of the GOP, the Maverick, the Consensus Maker, He Who Reached Across Aisles...

...and as soon as he was nominated they called him The Doom of All Mankind and Palin was all 4 horseman wrapped in $150,000 of clothes should would have no inclination to buy on her own.

McCain seemed to be in denial that his praisers so suddenly became his accusers, but we saw it as yet another sign he won't listen to his betters. His handlers swore to us he could reach across aisles and win the independent middle.

What went wrong?

"It must be that Palin woman!" they started to sneer towards the end when the polls refused to budge for McCain. Surely they couldn't be wrong. They were the smart ones. The ivy leaguers.

MENTAL EXPERIMENT: When looking at the GOP intellectuals who trash Palin don't you feel like you do when liberals trash her? Don't you get that feeling of cold condescension that tells you the only reason you like her is because you just don't know any better? That all of your points about family roots untrampled by government intrusions no matter how well-intentioned are going unheeded because these people are just so smart you're not giving them the chance to make it all work for you?

Do they give you that feeling?

Well, now that they tried their best and--we are being told--we ruined it for them by distracting the poor little babies we will have to rebuild the GOP. Our big fight wasn't with Obama but with ourselves. Compassionate conservativism became big government conservativism even though we warned them nature abhors a paradox. They refuse to admit their errors.

But now that Palin has been reviled from within we cannot use her except as an icon. If we try to hoist her back on the national stage the media, RINOs, and dems will all crow "Palin is universally hated. Heck, half of her own party cannot stand her!" Oh how they will cluck. This is just one more example of what an abysmal president McCain would have made. Granted, he's no commie terrorist sympathizer and Joe Biden is only worthy enough to serve as his valet but McCain is a monumental ass that has been a boat-anchor in this party his whole career.

We need to rebuild our party but the McCainiacs won't let go. We must take it from them well before we turn to looking at 2010. But Palin has been forever denied us as an actual candidate. But we have her template: young, family-centered, normal careers, kids and a basic love of country that works best when it doesn't feel the need to play superhero wiht a government briefcase.

..you?

This from the people who wouldn't go after Obama, tried to make nice-nice and be "centrist".

Now they lost, and if they ever want jobs running campaigns again they have to cover their asses.

I hate to say it, but slimeball shit throwers aren't just the exclusive domain of the Democrats.

Both of you are exactly right.

Unfortunately they have torn her down to the level she cannot be tapped for a future national-level office perhaps as senator.

I LOATHE the idea of the commie-terrorist sympathizer as my CinC but McCain would have been a disaster as a president. At least now the disaster belongs to the other side and we now have the opportunity to clean house while we watch The Temple of the Chosen One burning down from afar.

Let's sweep-out McCain and all who dared push him onto us.

She may not WANT to leave Alaska for national office after the treatment she got not only by the press, but by the doddering and ineffective campaign machinery of her own party and the McCain *cough* 'campaign machine.'  However I can easily see her as a Rep or Senator from Alaska when her Governorship is done, if she chooses to go that way with her career.  Exoneration in the Troopergate thing was a nice close-out to the national campaign, at least.

of course, if she were to start testing the waters, a good show of support would be to contribute and vote for her. wouldn't be much the media could do then, she's already "been vetted" and anything brought up would be unwarranted attacks.

...anything brought up would be unwarranted attacks.

Everything from troopergate to the AIP to Trig's parentage was unwarranted.

They still drove her unfavorable rating to 49%.

And now the McCain shitbags are piling-on in an effort to deflect blame away from themselves and their limp candidate. At lesat Bob Dole took Viagra.

But when former campaign staff starts talking about you like this and McCain--in typical tired, old man fashion--allows the attacks to go unanswered your national political career is finished.

As so eloquently stated in the GD forum: **** McCain

He plucked her out, put her front and center, allowed her to be savaged and then abandoned her.

Is Palin big enough to brush this off and move forward? Of course; it's one of the things that makes me cheer for her but as far as McCain is concerned this is conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman.

If Palin re-emerges in later years the ONLY thing you will here is, "Palin is such an idiot, dunce right-wing fundie, corrupt, theocrat even her own boss ended-up regretting taking her on." And since McCain is a seeping sack of shit on a sagging stick no amount of "Not true!" will pierce that talking point and reach the indie-middle.

I can't tell if McCain is oblivious, apathetic or spiteful.

The media destroyed her..McCain desserted her.  Her voice annoys everyone.  She can not be our candidate in 2012.  I feel sorry for her..but I would like to see her run for senate, we need a real conservative in congress.

McCain and his supporters need to find a rock and crawl under it. Seriously.

I listened to Jindal yesterday on Hannity and he seemed shaky.  We are looking for a rising star, he knows he's being examined and it shows.
We have 3 years to find our rising star. Pawlenty and Jindal can't go up against the Obama Machine..we need someone with bigger balls.  Think a young Reagan or a Newt.

The only way the GOP can take it back in 2012 is simple:  do NOT put a woman on the ballot.

Chauvanism is alive and well. The treatment of both Hillary and Sarah proves it.  The media ran with it, characterizing Hillary as a pant-suit wearing, emasculating, ball busting dyke and Sarah as a brainless, half-witted washed up beauty queen.

So **** you, Keith Olbermann, Tina Fey and the harpies on the View, and **** the rest of you who did it more subtly:  Matt Lauer, Viera, O'Brien, et al.  The majority of middle America follows the media like mindless sheeple.

We may not be considering how AMBITIOUS Sarah Palin is.

While the end game is playing itself out and she's been thrown under the bus, I'm not so sure that she isn't smart enough to figure out how to turn that to her benefit.

Playing the victim card has been done nicely in the past, especially by Hillary when Bill was having his dong slurped by Monica.

What we're seeing here is the inevitable chaos that occurs when a power vacuum occurs. There is lots of scrambling to try and figure out who's going to step into that vacuum and plug the leak.

Let's be patient and see where this takes us. I dare say that we're not done seeing Sarah Palin on the national stage.

And while I agree that chauvinism is alive and well and living in Chicago, Sarah Palin was a draw that cannot be ignored.

I'm with you Euph...... she's not a whiney curl up and die type gal and, she's smart.  I expect to see more out of her and I'd say plans are already being made.  The McCain handlers can just find their rock .... it was the same ole with absolutely no ground game and the republicans do NOT know how to fight.  I get the feeling that she does and I'll say now what I said after her 2nd speech,  tell the handlers to SFU and let Sarah be Sarah.  I'm watching with interest.

The country club blue-blood Republicans don't like Christian conservatives and this is an extention of that.  They're foolish enough to believe they can win elections without us, and/or they would prefer we go away in exchange for being in the minority.  Really stupid on their part because it will eventually be both their demise and that of the country, but they're short-sighted and don't see it that way.

Nicole's Knifework

Wow -that is some savage cutting & gutting that Nicole Wallace has just performed upon Sarah Palin. Nicole & I crossed swords once, during the Harriet Miers nomination battle. Watching what Nicole can do when she is seriously annoyed, I am grateful that I got away from that fight with nothing worse than a few bumps and bruises ....

That said: Some of these stories do not ring quite true to me, especially the story about Palin allegedly not realizing that Africa was a continent rather than a country. Apparently she did not grasp that "South Africa" was not the same thing as "southern Africa." But there a lot of possible innocent explanations for a mistake like that.

Larger  point: Would it not better serve the cause of understanding for Nicole Wallace to give an on-camera interview to Carl Cameron and state these points in her own voice - and allow viewers to asses their credibility? Wallace's fingerprints are all over these leaks anyway, so it's not as if she has any anonymity to lose.

=============================================================================

Yes, the same Nicole Wallace that sat by and let Palin take the hit over the wardrobe flap.  The same person who lists Katie Couric as one of her most admired people, and the person who INSISTED Palin interview with Couric FIRST.

Coincidence?  Maybe, but a hell of one if it is.

So in other words: McCain is a bigger idiot than we imagined...it started with the launch of his campaign's inner circle.

EDIT: Does Frum foresee the coming of RINO open season and wants to weasel back into our good graces after cheerleading McCain during the primaries and dissing Palin during the general? Or is this a principled mea culpa and he's making atonement by unmasking this shrew?

Throwing Mrs. Palin under the bus is probably the WORST thing the blue-blood RINOs could have done.  They may have vetted her, but I'll bet you a month's pay that they didn't pay attention to a damned thing they found out about her.

Like, for example, how Mrs. Palin became mayor of Wasilla by taking on entrenched corruption - and winning.  And then, when she ran for governor, she was doing the same thing - this time against her own party - and beat a corrupt REPUBLICAN incumbent Governor, without party support at all - the party big whigs were suppporting the incumbent.

I wonder what makes them think that she NEEDS THEM to advance a political career, after showing them soooo many times that she needs no such thing....

My point however, is who says anything about her being DONE beating corrupt, entrenched Republicans?
