I live about a mile outside of a small town of not quite 14K residents. The county road I live on is gravel and has 7 houses on it. Each lot has over 3 acres.
I guess the little monsters didn't wanna do any hiking.

When I was a kid, I lived on the outskirts of Shreveport, LA in a neighborhood filled with lots of a similar size. All the houses were set further away from the road, but hey, all the kids in that neighborhood could survive the journey. Heck, for one Halloween, we even had a big scavenger hunt that involved walking around the entire neighborhood seeking out clues, with several houses set up as haunted houses/safe houses for the hunt. When we were done, the clues led to a treasure chest hidden away in our house (6500 sq ft, so that made things a little trickier, given all the nooks and crannies this house had). Of course, the chest held a wonderful bounty of candy. What we did, compared to what kids do today, involved us actually working for the reward.
