I have to donfess I have never read any of his work.  Not that it sounds real appealing now, either.

In the mid-1970s, he came out with Hard Times, in which those who survived the Great Depression described their experiences.  That one was pretty good; I read other of his books later, but none of them were that good.

I tried reading one of his books. Something about a pissed off Irish kid that hated Jews and wanted to have sex with his sister? I think I made it though 3-4 chapters.
